Much of Connecticut's turf grass is made up of cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fescues. These grasses thrive in cooler temperatures and naturally become stressed during periods of hot, dry weather.
One of the most important things homeowners can do right now is raise their mowing height. Cutting grass too short removes valuable leaf surface that the plant needs to produce energy and withstand stress.
✅ Mow higher (3.5–4 inches is ideal)
✅ Leave grass clippings to help retain moisture
✅ Avoid removing more than one-third of the blade at a time
✅ Water deeply and infrequently if irrigation is available
✅ Reduce traffic on drought-stressed turf
Longer grass shades the soil, helps conserve moisture, encourages deeper root growth, and improves the lawn's ability to survive summer heat.
If your lawn is showing signs of stress, don't panic. Many cool-season lawns naturally slow down or go dormant during extended hot, dry periods and can recover when cooler temperatures and rainfall return.
