Are multifamily waste systems asking too much of residents?

Most systems still rely heavily on people making the right decision every time they dispose of something.

But what happens when trash is closer, clearer, more visible, or simply more familiar, while recycling and organics feel harder to access or easier to get wrong?

In shared residential environments, those small points of friction add up quickly.

Our latest article looks at why multifamily waste diversion increasingly depends on better infrastructure; not just better messaging: https://ow.ly/RIrp50Zjb0L

We’ve now published the recording and summary from last week’s webinar on Rethinking Downtown Commercial Waste Management.

A big thank you to Suki Janssen for sharing lessons from Athens-Clarke County’s eco-station pilot, and to Gerard Brown for his clear perspective on the link between sanitation, waste containment, and long-term rodent problems.

The discussion looked at recurring downtown waste problems which stem from limited space and need to serve multiple users, and how better containment can improve cleanliness, safety, and day-to-day performance.

You can now watch the recording and read the summary here: https://ow.ly/5wfb50Zj9Tj

In busy downtown districts, shared commercial waste and recycling systems often struggle with contamination, overflow, unauthorized use, and recurring cleanliness issues.

Join us on Thursday, June 25 - 1pm–2:30pm Eastern for Rethinking Downtown Commercial Waste Management, where we’ll explore what more effective management looks like in practice.

Featuring Suki Janssen, Gerard Brown and Nigel Deacon.

Washington, DC marked National Learn About Composting Day last week by announcing 20 additional public food-waste smart bins citywide, building on a program that has helped divert more than 11 million pounds of food waste since 2017.

We see this as a strong example of where organics capture is heading, especially where curbside collection is not yet viable: more convenient access, and public-facing infrastructure designed to work in the real world.

For many cities, simply providing organics carts at a recycling centre is no longer enough. Residents want accessible but controlled deposit points in the communities where they live.

Education matters. But infrastructure is what makes behavior change stick.

Join us on May 7 | 1:30–3:00 PM ET for the NERC webinar: Building Better Systems: Infrastructure That Drives Recycling Behavior.

Sponsored by metroSTOR, this session looks at how better system design can remove barriers, reduce contamination, improve accountability, and support long-term participation in recycling and organics programs.

Featuring Ashlea Smith Sabeti, Jen Heaton-Jones, Nigel Deacon, and moderator Chris Snow.

Secaucus, NJ is showing what stronger community composting infrastructure can look like.

By upgrading to metroSTOR controlled-access cart enclosures, the Town created secure, 24/7 food scraps drop-off sites that are easier for residents to use and simpler to manage.

The result: reduced maintenance, improved reliability, and a better experience for both residents and the compost hauler.

This is what long-term program sustainability looks like: durable, accessible infrastructure that supports participation and keeps operations running smoothly.

Multifamily is the hardest part of any organics program.

Curbside rollout is expensive, politically sensitive, and often slow to show results. Participation can lag, contamination can spike, and confidence erodes before programs have a chance to mature.

That is why more cities are taking a pilot-first approach to multifamily composting.

Today | COMPOST2026, Sacramento

At COMPOST2026, metroSTOR will be discussing multifamily compost drop-off pilots that allow cities to prove participation, reduce contamination, and de-risk expansion before scaling or mandating change.

If you are under pressure to deliver results in multifamily housing, but need evidence before committing citywide, we would welcome a conversation in Sacramento. Booth 302. 📍
