What Is Roof Flashing & Why Is It Important? | North San Antonio

What is roof flashing, and why is it so important? In this video, Nick Riley with Driftwood Builders Roofing shows a real example in North San Antonio, Texas, where missing metal flashing was causing water to leak into a home.

The homeowner was dealing with multiple leaks coming from an area where the roof meets another section of the house. After inspecting the roof, Nick found that there was no metal flashing installed in the gap where it should have been.

Roof flashing helps direct rainwater away from vulnerable areas and prevents water from getting through gaps and into the home. During a roof replacement, proper installation of metal flashing is an important part of protecting the house from water intrusion.

In this case, the previous roofer appears to have left the flashing out. Every time it rains, water can get through the exposed gaps and make its way down into the house, creating leaks.

Are Trees Bad for Your Roof? 3 Things to Check | Austin, TX

Are trees bad for your roof? They can be if leaves, branches, and tree debris aren't properly managed. In this video, Nick Riley with Driftwood Builders Roofing is in the Zilker area of Austin, Texas, showing the top three things he looks for when inspecting a roof surrounded by lots of trees.

First, Nick checks the roof valleys for leaves and debris. When leaves build up in the valleys, they can interfere with water flow and potentially contribute to water getting under the roof and into the home.

Second, he looks for tree branches touching or penetrating the roof. Overhanging branches can become a problem if they make contact with the roofing system. In this case, Adam's Apple Tree Service had already trimmed the trees back, keeping the branches away from the roof.

Third, Nick checks the gutters. Trees can drop leaves and debris into gutters, potentially affecting drainage. This home has gutter guards, which help prevent leaves and other tree debris from collecting inside the gutters.

If your home has a lot of trees around it, these are three important areas to keep an eye on during a roof inspection. Keeping valleys clear, branches trimmed back, and gutters maintained can help protect your roofing system and prevent drainage problems.
