Trees are the answer !
You walk past it every day without really seeing it. But that big old
tree at the end of the street is one of the most powerful machines in
nature β and it works for free, in total silence, for all of us. π³
- A TREE IS A NATURAL AIR CONDITIONER
On a hot day, it doesn't just throw shade β it transpires, releasing
water v***r that cools the air around it. A large mature tree can move
up to 100 gallons of water a day, cooling like several air
conditioners running for hours β without a single watt of electricity.
Tree-lined neighborhoods can run 10Β°F or more cooler than bare, paved
ones. On a heatwave night, that can be the difference between sleep
that drains you and sleep that restores you.
- A TREE IS AN AIR FILTER
Its leaves trap fine particles and absorb gaseous pollutants β and it
locks away carbon. Roughly half the dry weight of a tree's wood is
carbon pulled straight out of the air.
- A TREE IS AN ENTIRE CITY
A single old tree feeds and shelters hundreds of species β birds,
bats, insects, fungi, lichens. The dead and aging wood of old trees
alone supports countless beetles, the recyclers of the forest.
- A TREE IS A WATER PUMP
Its roots open up the soil, guide rainwater down deep, and recharge
the groundwater below instead of letting it run off the surface.
And it does ALL of this with no bill, no maintenance, no noise.
- HERE'S THE KEY:
A tree becomes useful by growing OLD. A 30-year-old tree does far more
for us β more cooling, more shelter, more water, more carbon β than
one just planted. The big ones are the workhorses. So in the yard and
on the street, the most valuable thing we can often do is simply let
them grow.
Before you cut one down, ask yourself everything it was quietly doing
for you. And plant one for the people who come after.
