Sun Vault Roofing won the 2026 Spark Award for Entrepreneurship a few weeks ago and we're still celebrating. This is the video that played at the ceremony, and this is what we said.

We built Sun Vault Roofing because roofing and solar were broken industries. Transient companies, predatory practices, overselling, and two trades that are often in conflict with each other, with homeowners stuck in the middle. We wanted to build the alternative: one team, one integrated system, no one getting oversold.

Being ethical inside your own company only goes so far. In an era full of misinformation and scams in both industries, education matters as much as the work on the roof. That's what we're building toward.

The value of Class 4 shingles is that they reduce the likelihood of needing costly repairs after moderate hailstorms and also qualify for insurance discounts that can help offset the higher upfront cost.

Your chimney isn't leaking because of your shingles. It's leaking because of the flashing.

Flashing is the thin metal at every transition point on your roof: chimneys, pipes, walls, vents. Think of your roof like a raincoat: the shingles are the fabric, flashing is the seam. Raincoats don't fail in the middle. They fail at the seams.

When flashing corrodes, shifts, or gets reused from the old roof underneath, water finds it every time. It's the most overlooked detail in roofing, and the most common source of leaks.

Next time you get a roofing bid: ask if they're replacing the flashing too.

Real estate agents focus on kitchens and bathrooms. Here's something that actually moves the needle and costs you nothing to mention: your roofing warranty. IF your warranty is transferable, you can hand it to the buyer at closing. It reduces their maintenance risk and removes one of the most common inspection objections. Most sellers never bring it up. Most buyers don't know to ask. If you're planning to sell in the next 10 years, make sure the roof you put on today comes with a transferable warranty.

Onions have layers. Roofs have layers.
On this Madison reroof, we tore everything down to the deck and found 20 sheets of plywood that needed to be replaced. We usually quote 5 to 10 on a job. If we'd shingled over instead, the homeowner would've been laying a $20,000 roof on a foundation that was already failing. Don't let your contractor do that.
Then comes the underlayment. We run 6 feet of ice-and-water shield up from every eave. Wisconsin code is 2. If solar's planned for a particular roof plane, we cover the whole plane. For Solstice solar shingles, the entire array footprint gets high-temp ice-and-water underneath.
Shingles go on last. The roof that actually lasts is the four layers underneath that nobody sees.

Wondering if your house is actually a candidate for solar? Three things decide it before we ever talk system size or solar panels vs. solar shingles.

Roof first. South-facing is ideal in Wisconsin, but east and west still produce, just less over a year. What kills the usable space isn't square footage, it's complexity. A simple gable can fit twice the system of a chopped-up hip roof with the same footprint, because every plumbing vent, dormer, and ridge break eats into the area we can actually lay panels on.

Sun second. Shade is the single biggest production killer, and oak trees fool a lot of homeowners because they leaf out late. A clear June morning doesn't predict what April looks like. Chimneys and neighboring buildings chip away at output too.

Electrical third. Many Madison-area homes built before the 90s still have 100-amp service. A typical solar install needs 200-amp to run safely, so a panel upgrade gets factored into the math before we ever run financial numbers.

And one more thing. If your roof has less than 10 to 15 years of life left, address the roof first. Pulling a system off and reinstalling it later costs more than doing it in the right order.

The Dane County Department of Waste + Renewables recycled 34,600 tons of shingles last year.

That means tens of thousands of roofs didn’t go to the landfill.
They became roads across Wisconsin.

And it only works because of a very specific system:

• Clean shingles are separated at the job site by contractors
• Processed locally
• Then reused in asphalt mixes (up to 5% allowed by WI DOT)

No policy → no recycling
No separation → no recycling
No system → landfill
