Summer heat doesn’t just make us uncomfortable—it can be tough on your foundation, too!

During long, hot, dry periods, the soil around your home can lose moisture, shrink, and provide uneven support beneath the foundation. Over time, that movement may show up as new or widening cracks, sticking doors and windows, gaps around frames, or uneven floors.

Our latest blog explains why summer heat affects Mississippi foundations, what warning signs to watch for, and how consistent soil moisture may help during prolonged dry spells.

While most homeowners associate foundation damage with wet weather, summer heat can cause its own unique and problems. These issues may not be immediately apparent until cracks appear in the walls or doors stick, but understanding why heat affects your foundation is the first step in addressing any....

A retaining wall may look like part of the landscaping, but it's there to do a job. It's helping manage soil where elevation changes occur around your property.

That's why changes in a retaining wall are worth noticing.
👀 Is it beginning to lean?
📏 Does part of it appear to be shifting?
💧 Is water collecting nearby?
🌱 Is soil washing away around or behind it?
🧱 Are sections separating?

Don't just look at the wall itself. Look at the soil, drainage, and surrounding area, too. Those details can help tell the bigger story.

A properly constructed retaining wall isn't simply about making a property look finished.

It's built to hold.

If your property meets the water, don't forget to occasionally turn around and look at the shoreline.

Changes can happen gradually enough that they're easy to overlook.

Look for things like:
🌊 Soil disappearing behind or around the seawall.
👀 Areas that appear to be settling.
🧱 Sections of the wall that look different than they used to.
💧 Voids developing around the structure.

One of the easiest ways to monitor changes? Take pictures. Stand in approximately the same location every few months and compare them. Your camera can make gradual changes much easier to spot.

When you're protecting waterfront property, what's happening behind and around the seawall can be just as important as what you see from the water.

Not all erosion control solutions are designed to do the same job.

Temporary measures can help slow soil loss for a limited time, while permanent erosion control is designed to address recurring problems and provide long-term soil stabilization. Knowing the difference can help you choose the right approach for your property—and avoid repeatedly fixing the
same problem.

Read on to learn the difference between temporary and permanent erosion control and which approach may be right for your property.

When an erosion issue becomes noticeable on a property, whether it's a disappearing shoreline, a sliding bank, or a hillside turning into patches of exposed earth, the initial instinct is to find a quick, inexpensive fix. This instinct is understandable, but it's helpful to know that not all erosion...

Just like everything else, homes experience wear and tear over time.

But there's a difference between normal aging and changes that might indicate a bigger problem.

Your home might not be able to talk, but it certainly knows how to drop hints!
And while not every crack or uneven surface indicates a serious problem, changes are worth investigating.

At Foremost Foundations & Construction, we help homeowners understand what's happening beneath their properties and explore appropriate repair solutions.
