Good Oak Ecological Services

Good Oak Ecological Services Repairing damaged ecosystems, creating environmentally sustainable human landscapes. We conduct prescribed fires to rejuvenate these fire dependent ecosystems.

We work in the fields of ecological restoration and sustainable landscaping. The goal of sustainable landscaping is to manage our human environment in a way that benefits the natural community. A cornerstone of our business is that we work exclusively with plants native to southern Wisconsin. All of our landscaping projects are designed with an eye towards water conservation. Rain gardens, bio-swa

les, and more subtle landscape features help rain water infiltrate close to where it falls rather than becoming part of the urban run-off that pollutes our stream and lakes. We work largely with local stone to both reflect the character of our region and also to reduce the pollution associated with shipping heavy stone long distances. Ecological restoration is the process of repairing damage done to natural areas by human activities. With modern pressures such as development, climate change and invasive species affecting our natural systems, just about every “natural” area needs management to prevent degradation - most people just don't realize it. We remove invasive species from woodlands, prairies, wetlands, and backyards. We spread native plants back into degraded natural environments by planting and spreading seeds. And we control erosion on shorelines and slopes using biodegradable erosion matting and planting deep rooted prairie plants to hold and rebuild the soil.

Thank you Kaylee for all the great work you do at Good Oak and Groundswell Conservancy!

Did you see our Westport Prairie Spotlight on Kaylee? Kaylee is a huge reason why we have enough native prairie seed to plant at Westport Prairie. If you want to read the entire spotlight, check out our blog post or our annual report on our website.

"There is a great quote in the book Noah’s Garden by Sara Stein that poetically sums up why conservation is important to me.

‘Remove the pheasant’s cover or the butterfly’s flower and you have erased its space. The less variety of habitat the landscape offers, the less space there is until, when all is mowed, even an expanse the size of a golf course becomes just a hole in the world.’

I am grateful to have this opportunity to work with the wonderful Groundswell staff and volunteers to fill some of the holes in our world.” –Kaylee Nelsen
