This isn’t a scathing criticism of baseball today; merely an interesting example of how the game has evolved.

During his historic 1968 season, when he went 22-9 with his famous 1.12 ERA in 34 starts for the St. Louis Cardinals, Bob Gibson had 28 complete games and 13 shutouts. In 2025, Tanner Bibee of the Guardians, Nick Lodolo of the Reds and Framber Valdez of the Astros tied for the major-league lead in complete games (two) and no pitcher turned in more than one shutout.

How many complete-game shutouts were there across MLB last season?

Interestingly, 13.

In 1968, Gibson’s 13 shutouts were the most in the majors. Luis Tiant of the Indians was second with nine. But Gibson’s 28 complete games didn’t even lead the National League. Juan Marichal of the Giants did -- with 30.

Gibson, who was 32 years old at the time, was voted the NL’s MVP and Cy Young Award winner that year. He also pitched three more complete games -- including a shutout -- against the Tigers in the 1968 World Series, although he did lose Game 7, 4-1.
