These two both also have allelopathic properties — they contain chemical compounds that can inhibit seed germination, and thus competition, of other species that grow around them.

We manage both of these in our native plantings. To try and balance pollinator benefit and the plant’s…assertiveness, we wait until they’re done flowering (but haven’t fully gone to seed) before deadheading (at minimum) or strategically pulling these plants. And still feel like we’re on the losing end sometimes. =)

A new bumble bee species has recently been observed in Wisconsin for the first time!

The Nevada bumble bee (Bombus nevandensis) has a historic range including the Western United States and Canada, but was observed in Minnesota and Chicago in recent years. Last summer, this species was first documented in Wisconsin when a female was recorded in Sauk County.

Closely related to the black and gold bumble bee, this species is distinct in its large size – especially among queens and females.

Wisconsin is home to 21 additional species of bumble bees, and you can learn more about identification and contribute by reporting sightings at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/WildlifeHabitat/BumbleBeeBrigade

Heard an odd noise out the window. Was trying to figure out what animal was making it, and spotted this little one out the back window on my flats of prairie plants!

Every spring, dame’s rocket (Hesperis matronalis) sparks debate: beautiful wildflower, aggressive spreader, pollinator plant, invasive w**d. (And no, it’s not phlox!) But one thing many people don’t realize is that nearly the entire plant is edible — and surprisingly versatile in the kitchen.

Young basal leaves have a sweet, peppery flavor similar to arugula and are rich in Vitamin C — great fresh in salads or blended into pesto. Older leaves can get fuzzy and bitter, but blanching improves them for cooked dishes.

The flowers are mildly sweet and floral with a hint of radish flavor, making a pretty garnish for salads or desserts.

Even the unopened flower buds and shoots are edible, tasting a bit like broccolini or spicy green pepper — delicious lightly steamed, sautéed, or tossed into stir-fries.

Have you ever tried eating dame’s rocket — or do you have another “w**d” you love using in the kitchen?

This is one that we’ve dealt with a lot at the Orchard. It *is* edible, if you’d like to remove some of it gastronomically, and as an invasive, you needn’t worry about over-harvesting! 😊
