Lost Weekend Farms

Lost Weekend Farms Lost Weekend Farms is a small farm in Middle Tennessee. Primarily focused on growing what's good…in food and in people.

Lost Weekend Farms, what began as a snarky reference to how we typically spend our spare time, is a of collection of fields and a small orchard and vineyard in Middle TN. As we've always enjoyed being connected to tradition and heritage by growing, picking and preserving, our mini-farm has become our outlet for exploring seasonal eating, biodiversity, politics, and environmental health. We each gr

ew up around backyard orchards and gardens and have been producing for ourselves and friends for 15 years before our ambition out paced our growing space (yard). Now we are reviving some of the area's best growing land that has been farmed by family on and off for the better part of a century. We are committed to natural growing methods and reintroducing older open-pollinated crops that have roots in Tennessee or adjacent regions. Look for us at Nashville area farmers markets with specific locations/schedules to come. We bring many types of produce, and farm products to market as well as cornmeal and dried beans.

We’ve been a little quiet on here lately, but we’ve been busy! Been cleaning up from Winter Storm Fern, filling up the greenhouse with seedlings, preparing growing beds both outdoors and in our new high tunnel, and trying to remember that this is our “downtime”. Join us for our 10th CSA season - link for info in our bio.

Hey guys, kind of a big announcement for us. After this Saturday’s market we’ll be away from markets for a few weeks. This is a bit of a planned absence, and depending on what’s growing well, we plan to return on December 13. As many of you might guess, the farm is a demanding partner and hasn’t allowed any full days off since at least April. So… we’re going to disconnect for a little while.

Last call on peppers? Come out for the pepper show. If you’ve been thinking about making some hot sauce, stuffing some peppers of chiles, final pickling of capsaicin-loaded delights, this may be your last chance. We’ll have those amazing New Mexico Chiles, jalapeños, loads of sweet peppers, Poblanos, Calabrian, Serrano, Lemon Drop, Red Savina, Datil, Shish*to, Cayenne…and of course all of our salad greens, Shuidong mustards, mustard greens, turnip greens, beets, 4 kinds of radishes and diakons, microgreens, Napa Cabbage, garlic, acorn squash, Hakurei turnips, baby bok choy, dill pickles, tomato sauce, zucchini relish, salsa, hot sauce and cheeses.

New product alert! We’ve only got 35 jars. Come prove to us we should make some more. Our first time canning picked jalapeños and carrots was about 15 years ago, this is the first time we’ve made enough to share.

Our zesty salad mix is back. Also new this week: beet greens, baby bok choy, hakurei salad turnips, radishes. Pepper season is chugging along for another few weeks until we get to a frost. Bagged greens will include New Zealand spinach, arugula, zesty mix, komatsuna. Summer heroes: three types of eggplant, okra, green beans, sweet peppers, stuffing peppers, spicy peppers, stupidly spicy peppers, Yukon gold potatoes, red skinned potatoes…acorn squash. This weeks pantry items: tomato sauce, hot sauce, zucchini relish, and dill pickles. Come see us at the same old spot at every Saturday and at the through the first week in November.

Local farms lost a friend today. Well, actually, last night, we heard and saw the emergency response and figured it was yet another disturbance at the park at the end of the Bend. This time, though it was the loss of our first friend in Neely’s Bend, someone we’d see at farm conferences and events advocating for food freedom, land access, and justice. Sue Buck encouraged us in our first season of growing food for others, inviting us into sharing her market stall at the . Her vision there along with Joe Willis, was about building community through agriculture, and nurturing local food systems and agrarian ways that are so easily lost. We’d spent many Sundays holding down the front porch of Amqui Station, sharing culinary delights leveraged with her extensive knowledge of cultural foods from around the globe, and being introduced to so many of Madison’s old-timers and characters. It was probably around that time that we realized she and my mom had been besties in grade school, and then that my grandfather and her dad had been childhood friends and later colleagues and in between, had been troublemakers together. Sue turned us onto coddled eggs, Terry Pratchett, the right way to make saag, and that little tip that we’ve shared with so many about fermenting grits, yeah, that came from Sue. When we were working to quit working in offices, Sue was the first person to take this at face value and helped advise and encourage us to keep going. We wish that we had spent more time together and we wish that she knew what an impact she made on us and really so many. We will miss her untamed spirit, storytelling, sarcastic humor, incredible food, and so much more. Rest easy Sue.

It’s not quite time for our potatoes to come out, but we dug some anyway. These beautiful thin skinned red potatoes will make their market debut this Saturday at the along with our line up of microgreens, slicing cucumbers, pickling cucumbers, Lebanese cucumbers, fresh uncured garlic, carrots, basil, French sorrel, arugula, lettuce mix, zesty mix salad, zucchini, squash, onions, dill, radishes, cauliflower, cabbage, Toscano kale, and Swiss chard.

Those keeping track, know that the increasing pressure from deer the last few years has severely hurt or devastated our potato endeavors. This season we took advantage of our new growing space in Pennington bend ()which is fully enclosed in an eight foot wildlife fence.

Well we haven’t navigated these waters before, we’ve had near complete loss on our field crops at both growing locations due to yesterday’s hailstorm. We were days away from broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cabbages…these may not be a total loss - time will tell. crops that just came online like Swiss chard and Mizuna were shredded and crushed leaving us with field pesto. Onions may be a total loss. Most of our first planting of field tomatoes are broken and the garlic took a beating.

CSA members, as always get priority, so our market table will be mostly microgreens and cheeses for a little while.

Ya know what you know and you don’t what you don’t. I know we just got about 4 inches of mix precipitation (rain/hail) in about 15 minutes. Lost some major tree limbs and with what happened to the electrical service at the edge of home base, there’s probably not going to be power or getting home for folks in the deeper part of Neely’s Bend. What I don’t know is how this will impact our field crops. Our garlic seems to have been hammered. You step out of the house and that’s all you can smell. Across the river, where most of our field crops are, we won’t be seeing until tomorrow. There is the distinct possibility we won’t have much on our market table this weekend, but we will see.
