Our latest project in universal design: an approach to building and remodeling that makes a home comfortable, safe, and easy to navigate for people of every age and ability, without feeling clinical or institutional.

Here, that means a zero-entry shower with no curb to step over, so getting in and out is simple and safe, even with limited mobility. Grab bars are placed exactly where they're needed, a handheld shower head adds flexibility, and the open, generous floor plan means there are no awkward step-ups or step-downs to navigate. Even the drawers are set low to the floor for easy reach.

Every detail works together so this bathroom can support our clients comfortably as their needs change, allowing them to stay in the home they love for years to come.

Remodeling a historic home takes more than design expertise.

It takes a team that knows how to navigate every detail.

This 1930s transitional home sits in one of Madison’s historic neighborhoods, where every decision - from materials to rooflines - has to meet both zoning and landmarks requirements.

Our design-build team guided the homeowners through every step: coordinating with city departments, handling permits, and managing construction so the project stayed true to the home’s character.

From matching trim profiles and railing designs to choosing finishes that blend seamlessly with the original architecture, we took care of it all.

The result is a porch and deck addition that feels like it’s always been there — perfectly balanced between preservation and modern comfort.

How do you survive a remodel with kids, pets, or working from home?

Short answer: We don’t wing it.

We know a remodel affects your entire daily routine: school mornings, nap schedules, work-from-home, evening routines. When there’s no clear plan, stress builds fast.

We believe good remodeling isn’t just about the finished space - it’s about helping you manage your space during the process too.

That’s why we plan logistics early: access points, timelines, and consistent communication - so you know what’s happening and when, instead of constantly wondering.

When you remodel your home with us, you get clear schedules, regular updates through our client portal, and a team that respects your home as a lived-in space - not just a job site.

Dreaming of adding space to your home, without having to move?

That was exactly the case for our clients and their 1950s ranch in Madison.

We transformed their unused attic into a fully finished second floor - *doubling* the home’s usable square footage. And this remodeling project won NARI's North Central Regional Remodeler of the Year Award for Interior Remodel $100–250K!

The home was filled with charm but short on space, and their unfinished attic sat unused, collecting dust.

They came to us with the vision of creating a private, comfortable retreat upstairs - complete with a bedroom, bathroom, and plenty of storage.

All without losing the character they loved about their home.

We built a new dormer on the back of the home, adding headroom for the stairs, bedroom, and bathroom, while blending seamlessly with the home’s original architecture.

Behind the walls, the engineering was just as custom as the design.

Our team re-engineered the attic floor system, placing beams above the floor to protect first-floor headroom, and using custom-fabricated steel brackets painted black to match the exposed ceiling aesthetic below.

Every inch of structure was carefully hidden or integrated into the design for a clean, intentional finish.

The result: a bright, open primary suite with a spa-like bathroom, warm wood cabinetry, black-and-white tile…

And our favorite feature - a floating sliding door that saves space and creates a modern architectural moment.

What was once an empty attic is now the most loved part of the home.

A private retreat that adds value, comfort, and efficiency in every season.

Sometimes the best way to add space isn’t to build more, it’s to reimagine the space you already have.

What kind of flooring options do you have for your finished basement?

When it came to choosing the flooring for this project, our clients were clear that they did not want carpet.

They wanted something that was durable in case of flooding, easy to clean, and safe for their grandkids.

They went back and forth with our design team on a variety of options - marmoleum, luxury vinyl tile or plank, sheet vinyl, and epoxy. After weighing the pros and cons of each option, they landed on epoxy flooring. Specifically, they went with an epoxy flake system that added texture for increased traction (a slippery surface was the main concern with epoxy).

The homeowners worked with our design team on every detail of their renovation - from making sure the carpet by the stairs visually flowed with the epoxy floor, to the adjustable shelving in the built-in cabinets.

Our clients chose a vibrant light blue color palette paired with crisp white trim and a tray ceiling, creating a calm, inviting retreat that feels like more than just a basement.

At Chads Design Build, we strive to be a thoughtful, caring, and compassionate company. We strive to improve every home that we have the privilege to renovate. Sometimes we make mistakes, and when that happens we take responsibility to make things right. We expect the same high standards from elected officials, public servants, and police officers. Trust and accountability are everything. Our heart is broken by recent events in Madison, but we shall overcome. I will never let hatred defeat love, or violence to replace peace. We choose love. - Chad Speight. President, Chads Design Build

BEFORE & AFTER: A bathroom transformed by tile.

This downstairs bathroom in Madison's Nakoma neighborhood got a full gut and rebuild.

Working with Fireclay Tile and the homeowner's creative vision, we designed a braided pattern that flows from the floor up both side walls, wrapping the room in color and texture. The other walls are clean white tile to keep things bright and balanced, paired with a sleek digital shower, heated towel bar, and a warm white oak vanity.

As part of a full basement and kitchen remodel, our design-build team transformed this once outdated basement in this Madison home into a spacious rec room with wet bar and fridge, a den/office area, and a full bathroom.

The homeowner wanted the space transformed into a true extension of her home. The finished basement now centers on an open wet bar and game area, framed by custom maple cabinetry, a built-in bench seat with a butcher block top, and a recessed electric fireplace set into its own dedicated wall.

Just beyond that space sits a refreshed den/office space (or guest bedroom) with a widened entry opening. The bathroom attached is a completely rebuilt bathroom with an expanded floor plan, a two-way sliding glass shower enclosure, tiled niches, and a quartz-topped vanity with a recessed medicine cabinet.

New windows throughout, along with new dimmable lighting, tie the whole level together and make it feel like a finished living space rather than a basement.
