Before and After: A Universal Design Bathroom
Universal design is not about making a home look institutional, or even making it obvious that special accommodations are in place. Done well, it simply makes a space functional and safe for everyone who uses it, at every stage of life.
This original bathroom had a jetted tub, a separate small shower stall with a curb, and a toilet in a narrow space between the shower and the wall. This wet room adjoined with a separate vanity room - connected by a swinging door and a raised tile threshold at the entry.
We gutted the space down to the studs and rebuilt it as a curbless shower room. We took the jetted tub out entirely and created a spacious shower with a half-wall entry, nothing to step over, and no door to navigate around. We replaced the swinging door with a pocket door, widening a clear path into the room.
Comfort details reinforce the accessibility work: a heated floor with its own thermostat, slip-resistant porcelain tile throughout, recessed lighting with no protruding fixtures to bump into, and even hardware placement on the cabinetry - designed for ease of use, rather than looks alone. Every grab bar is positioned at carefully calculated heights and structured to bear weight. These small details separate a bathroom that looks accessible from one that performs that way for years of daily use.
A well-planned, universal design bathroom is not just a solution for today’s needs. It’s an investment in living comfortably and safely in the home you love for years to come.
