This was one of those jobs that tested me. I had to reach down and pull out some skills I hadn’t used in a while.
We took what was originally a dining room and converted it into a home office. The homeowners wanted separation and privacy, but they didn’t want the room boxed in or feeling closed off.
The solution was a set of quad bypass doors paired with a custom partition window.
Funny thing about doors and windows like these—you can’t exactly walk into a store and buy the whole setup off the shelf.
I originally lined up someone to custom-build both pieces. Everything seemed like a good fit, so I agreed to put half down to get started. When it came time to meet and pay the deposit, I asked to meet at his shop.
He wanted to meet somewhere else.
One lesson I’ve learned over the years: when it comes to custom woodworking, don’t just take someone’s word for what they can do. Put eyes on their shop, their equipment, and their operation before handing over money.
Needless to say, I ended up sourcing the materials and building both the doors and partition window myself.
And man, was it a fun challenge.
Projects like this are one of the reasons I still love remodeling. Sometimes the plan changes, something falls through, and you have to figure it out. In the end, the homeowners loved it, and the finished space came out great.
