Oak season! What's it about?

Oaks are particularly susceptible to Oak Wilt infection in the spring and summer, while the beetles are infecting fresh wounds. For this reason, you should only prune Oak trees between November (first hard frost is a good measure) and March if possible. Any wounding from storms occurring between the spring or summer months should still be pruned as soon as possible to prevent infection, and should also be treated with a pruning sealant.

We want to help protect your Oak trees and maintain the health of our urban canopy. Contact Heartwood if you need help managing or caring for your oaks ,or if you just have a question. Consultation is always FREE!

Looks like we are trending in the right direction, but if we have a dry April, we may be right back into drought. We encourage homeowners to look out for their trees as drought can be stressful. Think about adding mulch rings to help manage moisture and watering your young/newly planted trees.

What happens after a tree is removed? At Heartwood, we encourage owners to keep healthy trees and primarily do removals for trees that are damaged, diseased, or potentially hazardous.

Once a tree is felled, we take the viable logs and begin the process of creating new ways to enjoy the tree after it's no longer standing. These logs are then cut and dried. The new slabs and boards are then used to create beautiful siding, furniture, art, and more! It's important to us that trees are enjoyed before and after their life. If you are interested in keeping your tree around, please reach out and ask about custom pieces to fit your home and enjoy for years to come.

Please hold the salt!

With the snow and ice we have in the Madison area, it's easy to want to go out and salt our driveways, sidewalks, or business parking lots. Many of us know it isn't good for our dogs' paws or the beautiful lakes that surround us, but did you know it also harms our woody plants?

Road salt invades the soil and prevents trees from properly uptaking water, essentially causing a physiological drought. Salt spray along roadsides can also coat dormant buds, burning them and either killing them or damaging their growth potential.

If/When using salt on your property:
1. Use salt sparingly and clean up large spills or piles.
2. Mix some sand into your salt to “stretch” the salt out a bit more.
3. Avoid piling snow with lots of salt on the root zone of trees and shrubs.
4. Protect valuable plants with physical barriers to keep salt off of the foliage and out of the root zone.

You can also plant salt-tolerant trees and shrubs and use alternatives to keep your pathways slide-free.

The second native tree we are featuring is the American larch. This bare-root beauty is a deciduous conifer that is commonly found in bogs around the state. Because they grow in wetlands, where there is lower oxygen levels in soil, they perform well in compacted clay soils. The same can be said for river birch, swamp white oak, and bald cypress. If you want to take the planting path less trod: go with American larch. The fall needle display is amazing and the soft green needles all summer are a tactile delight to behold.

This winter, we wanted to highlight a few native trees we sell that do really well in the Madison landscape. We wanted to first draw your attention to single-stem river birch. Single-stem river birch is a great shade tree that grows vertically and quickly. We also sell multi-stem clumps, but single-stem is something we have always been excited about because of its impressiveness and grace. Coupon Codes are available through our online store.
