🌧️ September Stormwater Report

MWA’s Stormwater Division continues working throughout Macon-Bibb County to maintain and improve our stormwater system.

During September, crews cleaned 136 catch basins, cleared nearly 9,900 feet of storm pipe, swept more than 207 curb miles, and completed 133 work orders. Crews also performed ditching, maintenance, inspections and responded to citizen requests across the community.

These efforts help keep stormwater infrastructure functioning properly and protect our community.

What happens to litter after it rains?

Trash left on our streets doesn’t always stay there. Stormwater can carry plastic bottles, food wrappers, cigarette butts, and other litter into storm drains, creeks, and streams where it can all eventually reach the Ocmulgee River.

That matters because the Ocmulgee is more than a river running through Macon. It’s a source of our drinking water and an important habitat for local wildlife.

Keeping litter out of our waterways helps protect water quality, wildlife, and one of Macon’s most valuable natural resources.

A cleaner Macon means a cleaner Ocmulgee.

Join us for the 20th Annual Ocmulgee Alive! river cleanup on Saturday, October 24, from 8:30–11:30 a.m.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to help remove litter and debris from the Ocmulgee River and surrounding areas. Cleanup locations will be assigned by email after registration.

💧 Did you know the cost of a fire hydrant has more than doubled since 2020?

MWA replaces more than 60 hydrants during an average year. At today’s price, those hydrants alone cost more than $195,000, not including valves, pipes, fittings, equipment, labor, or site restoration.
