20 Years of BB's Stump Service...Thank You!
In July of 2006, I never imagined that a simple conversation over dinner would turn into a business that is still going strong today.
Back in 2006, my wife, Abbey Britton and I were at her parents' (Roger and Cyndi Seifert) kitchen table when Roger randomly mentioned that he thought stump grinding would make a good side business. The very next day, on a rainy Saturday Roger and I went out to check his corn and bean fields because of the torrential downpour. We took a detour to look at an old stump grinder that was for sale, West of Moweaqua. It was an older 1970s model.
Before the day was over...I owned it.
It wasn't a fancy machine, but it was a start. After buying it, I scraped together another $450 to put my business in the Decatur area phone book yellow pages. Yes, the yellow pages. (Younger folks on here may not understand that part.)
Then something happened that many of you probably remember.
At the end of November 2006, a major ice storm hit central Illinois. Trees were damaged everywhere, and many families in our area were without power for nearly a week. When spring arrived, the phone started ringing...and it just kept ringing. Every call came with the same story about how the November ice storm killed their tree. That little side business suddenly had more work than I ever expected.
Not long after that, I made the decision to invest in a brand-new stump grinder. It was a big step for Abbey and myself, but it turned out to be one of the best business decisions I've ever made.
Over the years, the equipment has changed, but the goal hasn't: do quality work, treat people fairly, and leave every property looking better than I found it.
Fast forward 20 years...to July 2026.
Thousands of stumps have been removed, countless customers have trusted me with their property, and what started as a rainy-day idea has become a business that has blessed our family in more ways than I ever imagined.
To everyone who has hired me, recommended me to a friend, or supported BB's Stump Service over the past 20 years—thank you. I truly appreciate every opportunity you've given me, and I'm grateful to be a small part of the small communities of Macon, Moweaqua, Blue Mound, Mt. Zion, Harristown, Niantic, Illiopolis, and beyond. (My farthest drive was Fisher, IL...thanks Jesse McFarling.)
Here's to the next 20 years!
