🎃 Is your winter squash READY TO PICK?

I'm pulling this video back out of the archives because it's exactly the right time of year for it! 🍂

If you've got butternut squash or other winter squash growing in your garden, do you know how to tell when it's actually ready to harvest?

In this video, I'm out in the garden showing you:

🌱 The simple fingernail test for checking maturity
✂️ Why you should leave some stem attached when harvesting
🎃 Which squash can go into storage—and which should be used right away
☀️ What to do before storing your winter squash
🌿 And why I LOVE growing these big squash on trellises

Plus, because this is an actual garden and not a television set, there are squash bugs, spiders and a few questionable squash involved. 😂

📅 I'm republishing “How to Harvest Winter Squash” this Sunday at 10 AM on YouTube.

If you're growing winter squash this year, what varieties are you waiting to harvest? Tell me in the comments! 👇

🌱 Learn. Grow. And then grow some more.

Happy Sunday! 🎃 This is the time of year when northern gardeners start seeing the finish line.

Some plants are slowing down. Others are FINALLY producing what we've been waiting all summer for.

And that's a good reminder that gardening isn't one long growing season.
It's a collection of little seasons.

Peas have their moment. Tomatoes have theirs. Pumpkins have theirs.

Enjoy what's happening now instead of worrying about what's already finished.

🌱 I grow gardeners – through every season.

🍂 Fall is for more than cleanup – it’s one of the BEST times to plan what comes next!
If you want a garden that comes back year after year, supports pollinators AND requires less work from you, understanding the plants you choose makes a huge difference.

In this podcast episode I’m talking about Perennials, Annuals & Pollinator Gardens – What Every Gardener Should Know. 🌱

We’ll talk about the differences between annuals and perennials, how they fit into your garden, and how thoughtful plant choices can help you create a beautiful, lower-maintenance space that also feeds bees, butterflies and other pollinators. 🐝🦋

And fall is the perfect time to put that knowledge to work! It’s a great season to:
🍃 Buy perennials – often at end-of-season prices
🍃 Divide and move established perennials
🍃 Fill gaps you noticed this summer
🍃 Add more pollinator-friendly plants
🍃 Plan next year’s garden while you can still see what worked – and what didn’t!

And if you’d rather have some help figuring out what to plant and where to put it, that’s exactly what I do. Fall is a wonderful time for garden consultations, designs, plant shopping and renovations.

Happy Saturday! 🐾Every garden needs a supervisor.

Mine specializes in stick removal, unauthorized pruning and randomly digging holes that were NOT included in the landscape design.

Her consultation fee is snacks. 😂

🌱 I grow gardeners. Apparently I'm also growing a garden assistant.

Who's your garden helper – dog, cat, chickens, kids...or are you smart enough to garden alone? 😂

🌸 Don’t be afraid to play a little.
Not every garden project needs a plan.

Sometimes you just grab a few flowers, snip a little greenery, move things around, change your mind…and see what happens. 💐

That’s one of my favorite things about growing flowers—you get to enjoy them in the garden and bring them inside to create something beautiful.

🍃 Grow it. Cut it. Play with it. Enjoy it.

What flowers are you bringing inside right now?

Happy Thursday! 🌳 A landscape doesn't have to be divided into pretty plants over here and food garden over there.

Fruit trees, herbs, berries and vegetables can become part of the landscape itself.

That's an edible landscape – and it's one of my favorite ways to help busy gardeners get more from the space they already have.

If you'd love to grow food but aren't interested in turning your backyard into a farm, I can help you figure out what could work.

🌱 Consultations, personalized garden designs and DIY planting plans are available.

🍉 Did you grow watermelon this year?
There’s something ridiculously satisfying about growing a watermelon in your own backyard—especially when you finally cut it open and find out if all that waiting paid off. 😄

How did yours turn out? Sweet and juicy, disappointing, or still sitting out there making you wonder when it’s actually ripe?

🍃 I help busy gardeners grow more food with simple, practical, low-fuss gardening methods.

Need help planning what to grow, where to plant it, or how to make your garden work better next season?
