Denver has no shortage of rooftop views. We thought one of them should give something back.

Proud to share our first green roof design by Noah D. Bernstein in the Mile High City: a boutique rooftop garden conceived as a living room in the sky—equal parts refuge, gathering place, and small piece of green infrastructure.

As Denver grows, so does the case for more green innovation overhead. Every planted roof is an opportunity to make the city a little cooler, softer, and more connected to living systems.

Good design doesn’t stop at the back door.

The custom chicken coop is built with the same material language as the rest of the property — standing seam metal, exposed timber rafters, matte black steel, and a form that belongs on this hillside.

Drawn from the land it grows in.

The Woodland Garden at Songbird Sanctuary was designed around what was already there — existing Ponderosa pine, native boulders, the natural contour of the hillside. Manzanita, creeping juniper, serviceberry, and native grasses woven between gravel paths that curve the way water moves.

As the design evolved, we made a deliberate shift toward fire-wise principles. Plant beds were separated to reduce continuous fuel, low-growing species were prioritized to eliminate ladder fuels that carry flame into the canopy, path widths were enlarged to create natural breaks in the planting, and boulder mass was increased throughout — anchoring the composition while doing the quiet work of defensible space.

Beauty and resilience, designed together.

A tree swing. A stone wall. A place to simply be.

The Seasonal Tea Garden at Songbird Sanctuary was conceived as a living room for the land — a place to gather, steep, and settle into the rhythm of the year. Reclaimed timber stepping strips wind through catmint, salvia, and dianthus. A pergola frames the foothills. Multi-stem Hawthorne and Birch trees mark the passage of time, their colors shifting throughout the year.

Every plant chosen for what it gives across all four seasons. Every material chosen to age gracefully into the landscape.

Before we move a single stone, we read the land.

Our ecological analysis for Songbird Sanctuary. Mapping solar exposure, prevailing wind patterns, hydrological flows, soil structure, habitat zones, and pollinator corridors — this is the groundwork of responsible stewardship, and the foundation from which every design decision that follows is made.

Understanding these patterns is what separates a design that endures from one that merely exists. It’s the difference between working with a place and working against it.
