Scheduling update!

SEALCOATING - As of today, we are officially telling all customers no more promises on sealcoating work for 2026. Everything will be on a weather permitting basis, and new callers can expect late September scheduling for most driveway sealcoating, if we are able. The past few weeks of daily scattered storm chances are partially to blame for such a push back on scheduling, along with the NICU emergency.

PATCHING - We have availability in mid September for infrared repairs, or all of October for simple pothole patching (such as use of Aquaphalt)

CRACK FILLING - Crack filling exclusive jobs still have availability the first part of October. We wait until later season, to ensure the growing season of weeds is behind us and the contracting, cooler pavement allows for better tar filling. We can also crack fill if you are interested in sealcoating, the sealcoating part will just likely be a 2027 project

Hi All!

Thanks to our customers for the patience last week! Last week, the family emergency was more of a blessing in disguise as a future sealcoater was born almost 2 months ahead of schedule. Thankfully St Vincent NICU is top of the line and he is doing well 😁

With losing the entirety of last week to that blessing, we are pushed behind an entire week of scheduling for sealcoating. Jobs promised "by end of July" will be on schedule for the coming week. Also, newly hired on jobs will be booking respectively into mid September. That being said, September is always a hit or miss month with weather, if it stays warm & dry we certainly can get new jobs done but if the temperatures drop we may need to book your sealing in 2027 🥶 so don't delay! Call now if you have any last minute asphalt maintenance plans we seriously only have a few more days open to scheduling ⏰️

Over the past few years, a lot of questions have come up regarding cost. So, let us be transparent

Annually, our sealcoat costs per gallon to us rise. Same with tar. And we are also susceptible to the fluctuation of gas prices. Costs, will in fact, raise a little bit annually. So yes, a driveway sealed 5 years ago will cost more now than it did then, it is the unfortunate path of inflation. That being said, our business model may be different from other companies.

Some companies push for annual or bi-annual work, where they insist on yearly sealcoating and/or crack filling. They charge cheaper, with hopes to do it more often, and use less product to make their profits back over the course of several years. We do not advise annual sealcoating, as applying too often can overseal the asphalt and actually greatly reduce the rejuvenating factors of sealer, because new sealer cannot adequately pe*****te to the asphalt below once too many layers build up. Although we do understand some people desire the always fresh, nice looking driveways and annual work may be more up their alley, that is the customer's choice to make. We do our best to advise people against this practice and to save their money and time

We suggest every 3-5 years for most residential driveways as to not overseal. Our product is only cut at 15% water, just enough to get it to spray out, with the full intention of proper coats (sometimes even 2 coats) so that you get the full 3-5 years between applications.

A simple pricing breakdown, for example, is as follows:
Company A, Joe Schmo, bids a project for $250 to sealcoat and suggests getting it done every 2 years. after 10 years, that is 5 applications, at minimum $1,250 out of pocket if not more if they raise prices to match the economy
Company B, Jay's Asphalt, bids that same project at $400 for a sealcoat and we suggest getting it done every 3-5 years. Over the course of 10 years, we seal it at 2-3 times, for a total of $800-1200 cost, depending on the economy as well
After 10 years, Company B can potentially save you 100's of dollars but since they were more expensive out the gate, it was assumed they were overpriced and dismissed.

Now that doesn't mean we want to have 100% of the work in our area, we don't have the capacity for it! In 2025, we landed and completed 81% of our bids, and didn't hardly have a day off but it's fine for us. Without competition, we would be at wits end with the amount of work needed. This is just a PSA to encourage people looking for sealcoat work to weigh your options, consult your companies & ask questions about the work you are receiving, and make and educated decision that is more than just holding the prices side by side and automatically choosing the cheapest option for the simple fact that it is cheaper at the time. Due to a family emergency overnight, our scheduling may be delayed. Expect delays not only on project completion, but also on bid work and return calls. Sorry for any inconvenience. We are NOT canceling by any means, it is a small hiccup (nobody is dying!) And we will return to the swing of things after a few days.

**SPREAD AWARENESS** - We need voices to be heard

Back before Covid, our company (and a few other local companies) went in front of Wisconsin state assembly and proposed a ban on coal tar based sealers. The assembly passed a vote unanimous to ban coal tar based sealers state wide, and it was sent the next batch of lawmakers for review. Unfortunately, it died there not because it was shot down by the lawmakers, but because Covid essentially cancelled the bill all together. It was dismissed without ever having a vote. The people with the strongest backing complete with scientists and attorneys, did not have the funding to pursue it another year. So there it died. Our local State Representative Joel Kitchens was one of our key leaders for the bill at the time, and the pictures below were articles courtesy of our friends at Clean Wisconsin. There is also a U.S. organization, Coal Tar Free America, that supported a ban at the time (you can google them/find them on Facebook still). We even met and teamed up with Green Bay mayor Eric Genrich and with him passed a successful ban for Green Bay.

We are making a post today to help bring awareness to our local communities. Of the past 2 years, we have seen more and more driveways (even in our local Dyckesville this year) that have been sealed with coal tar sealants. Don't need to take our word for it, there are several articles are backed by strictly science. Over the past 10 years we have made several posts (you can scroll down on our business page to see!) about the negative environmental and carcinogenic properties of this sealant, we have not used it in almost 20 years now ourselves. Maybe, with enough shares and talk, we can gain the interest of our current lawmakers and get it back on the radar. It is banned in several towns/cities in Wisconsin already, but not enough. The entire state of Minnesota has a ban on coal tar, and Wisconsin had momentum before and should be able to have it again.

Most of your local companies, ourselves and our competitors, do not use coal tar sealers. The problem lies mostly with out of towners, who acquire it and bring it in to our areas from a couple counties away. We all have access to several great emulsion products as substitutes, and follow our local bans as we should being companies in your communities. The city of Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay, Gibraltar, Village of Luxemburg, city of Manitowoc, and several others (see here: https://coaltarfreeusa.com/bans-2/ ) already have some form of ordinance in place. However, the small townships (like Dyckesville aka Town of Red River) in between are getting hit hard by these toxic sealants and needs to be addressed. We at Jay's Asphalt & DeJardin Asphalt Maintenance, LLC have been and always will be for a ban on coal tar and with backing from other local companies and legislature we can stand against any more of this product hitting our areas

We have looked at over 70 properties in less than 2 weeks time, and we keep getting the same question...when do you start?

We don't pick an exact day every year, instead we watch the weather. We've started some years as early as mid May and other years as late as mid June. It all depends on how the weather goes, we need dry ground and warm air to cure the sealer and make sure the crack fillers can hold in the cracks. And last night, we had a blanket of frost still at our shop yard!

We are booking new hires for late June (hopefully!) But weather can change that. Also, we've been blessed with many small businesses aka "weekend work only" signing up already, any weekend projects that book now will be scheduling into July. 1 or 2 rainy weekends can make that scheduling into almost August, so act fast if you want on the books yet for this year!

When you can't see your driveways, neither can we!

This insane & record-setting rainfall in April has our estimating time lines pushed back. Usually by now, we have dozens of bids out and about for the season. Unfortunately, with such ground saturation, asphalt can be prone to all kinds of damages from sink holes to widening cracks that can show up in less than a day. With that being said, weather permitting we will hit the roads next week.
