🚨 LOCAL CONTRACTOR WARNING — DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE HIRING SOMEONE 🚨
I normally don’t make posts like this, but after what happened, I feel like people in and around the community deserve to know what happened to me.
I recently hired a guy who presented himself as a “concrete master” to pour and finish a slab. You can see the attached image to know who the person was. The price was $3,600 to pour, and finish 5 yards of concrete with a smooth surface.
After coming to an agreement, he requested a $400 deposit upfront for “labor.” I paid it...
The day of the pour, the concrete showed up to the job site at approximately 9:30am, and this guy and his "helper" arrived around 10:15am. Keep in mind, he is the one that ordered the concrete and set this time.
I wasn’t at the property for the entire pour, but when I left the concrete was down and they were in the process of smoothing it out. When they finished (approximately 2 hours later), I received a picture of the slab along with a text saying: “We got it done bro, can you send me the money to my CashApp?”. Based on the single picture he sent me, I found the following issues, that I immediately questioned:
❌ Holes/voids in the concrete
❌ Ripples and obvious uneven areas
❌ No edging completed on any sides of the slab
❌ No expansion/control joints
❌ French drains that were covered in concrete
❌ Concrete splatter all over the side of the house
❌ Concrete splatter all over the fence
❌ Concrete splatter on the HVAC unit
❌ Overall finish that looked like something my 4 year old could have done.
Of course I questioned the work before handing over any additional money.
I asked him if he seriously considered the job finished and brought this entire list of issues to his attention.
His response?
The work was "ruff, but it was done right. Can you send me the money.”
I told him I wasn’t comfortable paying any additional money until the problems were addressed. After going back and forth with him about the job he considered "complete", his response was basically:
If I can’t pay him, he’s not coming back to fix it.
I told him I wasn’t going to pay anything additional for work that clearly needed a lot more work.
After getting frustrated with me, he then informed me I could keep my money and that he would not be coming back.
And then, to top it all off, I was told:
“That’s what you get for not paying me.”
🤦♂️
Let me be very clear:
I don’t expect any work to be perfect. I understand concrete is hard work. I understand things happen.
What I DO expect when I’m paying $3,600 is for the person doing the work to actually stand behind it. I was told along time ago that any job worth doing, is worth doing right and I stand by that until this day.
If there are legitimate problems, fix them.
If you make a mess on someone’s house, fence, and HVAC unit, clean it up.
If you cover an entire drainage system that YOU installed, with concrete, clean it before you leave!
And if the person that hired you points out obvious problems with your so called finished product, don’t tell them “it’s done right” and then refuse to attempt to fix anything that they addressed.
I’m not making this post to be nasty or start a fight. I’m making it because I wish I had seen a post like this before I hired this so called "concrete master".
Nonetheless, I'm down $1900 for concrete and rental machinery, and now I have to spend the next 4 days ripping this concrete out, and pay additional $3000-$4000 to have it redone.
So, with that being said, if you’re in the area and you need concrete work done: You might want to check out the attached pictures before you even look in this mans direction.
I’m not going to tell anyone whether they should or shouldn’t hire this person.
I’m simply sharing my experience and what I found when I came back to this so called "professional job".
