🐝 BEES & WASPS IN LOUISIANA — WHAT HOMEOWNERS SHOULD KNOW 🐝
Louisiana’s warm climate makes it a great place for bees and wasps to thrive. While bees are important pollinators, wasps can become a serious nuisance when they build nests around your home.
🐝 BEES
Bees are important pollinators that help flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables grow.
Watch for:
• Bees repeatedly flying in and out of one area
• Swarms or visible hives
• Bees entering walls, attics, trees, or other openings
• Buzzing coming from inside walls or structures
🐝 WASPS
Wasps are predators and can be beneficial to the environment, but they can become aggressive when their nests are disturbed.
Common Louisiana wasps include:
🟢 Paper Wasps — Build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, porches, and overhangs.
🟢 Yellow Jackets — Often nest underground or inside wall voids and can sting repeatedly.
🟢 Bald-Faced Hornets — Build large paper nests and can become highly defensive when threatened.
🟢 Mud Daubers — Build mud nests and are generally less aggressive than many other wasps.
⚠️ WHY WASPS CAN BE A PROBLEM
• They may build nests near doors, patios, play areas, and outdoor living spaces.
• Some species can sting multiple times.
• Disturbing a nest can trigger defensive behavior.
• Multiple stings can be especially dangerous for children, pets, and people with allergies.
