Acorn Forestry A comprehensive, natural resource management, consulting, and forestry services firm headquartered in Lufkin, Texas. www.acornoutdoors.com

Founded in 1999, we have achieved a highly successful record of developing and executing innovative land management and natural resource solutions. Acorn Forestry operates two primary business units; a forest management/environmental consulting division and a forest services/construction division. In contrast to other consulting firms, our staff of professional foresters is directly supported by our own in-house heavy equipment, trucking, professional equipment operators and maintenance facility. This corporate structure not only provides us with a deep understanding of operational capabilities and costs, but also the capacity to develop and execute plans efficiently, timely and in ecologically sound manner. We also provide sub-contractor oversight for a range of forestry services including aerial herbicide application, fence, gate, and road construction, and Acorn Forestry operates under a philosophy of integrity, innovation, leadership, and excellent execution.

Tree planting should start with the site and objective, not a species list. Soil, drainage, expected moisture, wildlife goals and desired future use should determine what gets planted. October is a good time to begin planning and sourcing seedlings for upcoming planting projects.

Two areas on the same property can respond very differently to the exact same management practice.

Soil depth, texture, drainage and water-holding capacity can influence which plants establish well, how productive a site can be, where erosion is more likely and what management options make sense.

Before treating the whole property the same, know what’s underneath it. NRCS Web Soil Survey is a useful starting point for seeing how soils change across a tract and understanding some of the opportunities and limitations tied to each area.

Acorn production can vary considerably from tree to tree and year to year. This fall, notice which oak species—and even which individual trees—are producing heavily. Those observations can help explain where wildlife is spending time and identify valuable mast-producing trees worth retaining.

Tree count alone doesn’t tell you how crowded a stand is. Basal area accounts for the size of the trees, not just how many are present. That’s why two stands with the same trees per acre can have very different levels of competition—and very different management needs.

Good management should leave evidence. Pick a few permanent photo points across the property and photograph them from the same location and direction each year. Over time, those photos can show changes in ground cover, brush, erosion, tree health and habitat that memory alone won’t catch.

Every property has different goals.

More forage. Better timber. Better wildlife habitat. Less brush. Healthier land. Better access.

Our job is to help figure out what makes sense for the property in front of us.

That’s really what Acorn is about.

Brush management isn’t always about clearing everything.

Sometimes you need more open ground.

Sometimes you need to leave cover.

Sometimes you need a little of both.

It depends on what you’re trying to do with the property.

Not every day in the field needs a big lesson.

Sometimes it’s just good country, good work, and a property worth taking care of.

Timber management and wildlife management don’t have to be two separate things.

The way a stand is thinned, burned, opened up, or left alone can all affect how wildlife uses the property.

That’s why we look at the whole place instead of just one piece of it.

Fall is getting closer, which means it’s time to start thinking about the projects you want to tackle once temperatures cool down.

Brush work. Timber work. Prescribed fire prep. Habitat projects. Grazing changes.

Planning ahead makes everything easier when the right weather window shows up.
