Most of the AC systems breaking down across the Gulf Coast this month didn't break. They were never set up right to begin with.

The cheapest quote and the best decision are seldom the same thing, especially with HVAC.

It's tempting in this heat to call around, find the lowest number, and go with it. We get it. But here's what that low number usually leaves out — and what it costs you later.

The quote that looks too good is often missing the diagnosis. Someone gives you a price over the phone before anyone's looked at the actual system. That's a guess, and guesses get "corrected" once they're already in your house and the job's torn open. The low number can also mean cut corners — skipped steps, cheaper parts, a fix that holds just long enough to clear the warranty and not a day longer.

We don't play that game. When we quote you, it's after we know what's actually wrong, and the price is the price. No surprise add-ons halfway through. No work you didn't agree to. And when something is genuinely optional, we tell you it's optional rather than selling it as urgent.

There's a sound your AC makes right before it costs you a lot of money. Most people ignore it.

It's usually small at first. A rattle when it kicks on. A faint hiss. A click that wasn't there last summer. A unit that runs and runs but never quite gets the house where you set it. Easy to tune out until it isn't.

A rattle or buzz often points to a loose component or a failing motor. A hiss can be a refrigerant leak, which makes your whole system work harder for less. Your AC is about to work harder than it has all year. Here's the one thing that decides whether it makes it through the summer.

The filter.
It sounds too simple to matter. It isn't.

A clogged filter is the number one reason we get called out in June and July — and most of the time, the system didn't break, it choked. Airflow gets strangled, the unit runs longer and hotter to hit the same temperature, your power bill climbs, and the parts that were never meant to run that hard start to give out early.

On the Coast, with the humidity and the dust and the pollen we deal with, a filter doesn't last as long as the box says. Pull yours and look at it. If you can't see light through it, it's already costing you money.

Check it monthly through the summer. Swap it when it's dirty, not when the calendar says. It's a few dollars and five minutes — and it's the difference between a system that coasts through August and one that quits in the middle of it.
