250 years ago, 56 men gathered in Philadelphia and boldly declared that a free people could govern themselves. They proclaimed words that would change history
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
They knew those words could cost them everything. Facing the most powerful military in the world, they fought with courage, endured hardship, and secured the blessings of liberty for a new nation.
The road that followed was not easy. Through debate, sacrifice, and perseverance, our Constitution established a government where the people—not a king—hold the ultimate authority. It became what Alexis de Tocqueville would later call "the great experiment."
Over two and a half centuries, America has grown, endured, and overcome tremendous challenges. We have celebrated great achievements, confronted difficult chapters in our history, and continually sought to build a more perfect Union. Even through our darkest moments, our nation has endured.
For many Americans, faith has been a source of strength, hope, and renewal. Inspired by that hope, generations have answered the call to defend freedom, extend compassion to those in need, and pursue discoveries that have carried us from our shores to the stars.
Today, as we celebrate 250 years of independence, we remember that our story is still being written. We are not perfect, but we continue striving toward the ideals that first inspired this nation.
