🐝 **How do you judge colony strength in the fall? πŸ‚**

Fall is an important time to take a good look at your colonies and ask: **β€œIs this hive strong enough to make it through winter?”**

But colony strength isn’t just about how many bees you see flying!

When evaluating a colony in the fall, look at:

🍯 **Food stores** β€” Does the colony have enough honey and access to it?

🐝 **Population** β€” How large is the cluster, and does the colony cover the frames well?

πŸ‘‘ **Queen & brood** β€” Is there evidence of a healthy, productive queen and a solid brood pattern?

🧀 **Varroa levels** β€” Has the colony been monitored and treated appropriately if needed?

πŸ—ΊοΈ **Winter cluster & configuration** β€” Is the colony arranged so the bees can move through their food stores as temperatures drop?

🌿 **Overall health** β€” Are the bees showing signs of disease, pests, or other problems?

A colony can have plenty of bees and still be poorly prepared for winter. **Strength is about the whole picture.**

🐝 At B’s Bees, we believe the best beekeeping decisions start with learning how to *read the colony*.

The Beach has been a great place for bees reproducing this year. This colony was a year old and looks really promising to rebuild their strength and possibly split them next year.

🍯 **100% Baldwin County Produced Honey β€” Truly Local!** 🐝

When we say our honey is **100% Baldwin County produced, we mean it!**

Our bees collect nectar right here in **Baldwin County**, and our honey is harvested locally by our own beekeeping operation. No honey shipped in from another state and bottled here. Just genuine honey produced by Baldwin County bees. 🐝🍯

The word *β€œlocal”* can sometimes be confusing. Honey may be brought in from other statesβ€”such as Mississippi, Georgia, or Floridaβ€”and then packaged or marketed locally.

So, if truly local honey matters to you, **ask where the honey was producedβ€”not just where it was bottled or packaged.**

When you choose genuinely local honey, you're not only getting honey from your communityβ€”you’re also supporting the local beekeepers who care for the bees that help our community thrive. πŸ’›

**Know your beekeeper. Know your honey. 🐝🍯**

🐝 **FALL-MADE NUCS β€” READY FOR A STRONG SPRING START!** 🌼

Our **Fall Nucs** are made with queens raised the previous fall β€” typically **September/October** β€” giving them time to establish and overwinter before pickup.

πŸ“… **Pickup begins late February/early March**, weather and colony conditions permitting.

Why start with an overwintered nuc?

πŸ‘‘ **Young, established queen**
A queen that has already been laying and building a colony gives you a strong head start going into spring.

πŸ₯š **Strong laying pattern = rapid buildup**
As the colony expands, you can take advantage of the spring nectar flow instead of spending the first part of the season simply getting a new package or fresh nuc established.

🍯 **Build toward honey production**
A strong spring population means more bees available to forage when the flow arrives β€” and more opportunity to put that early-season growth to work making honey.

🧱 **Build drawn comb**
A growing colony can put that population to work drawing comb, giving you valuable resources for the rest of the season.

🐝 **Set yourself up for splits later**
Once the colony is strong and conditions are right, an established spring colony can give you the opportunity to make a split later in the season β€” helping you grow your apiary from a solid starting point.

**A fall-made, overwintered nuc isn't just a colony for spring β€” it's a head start on the entire beekeeping season.**

If you're looking for a strong start to the 2027 season, **Fall Nuc reservations are a great way to get ahead.** 🐝🍯

🌻🐝 **YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A BEEKEEPER TO HELP THE BEES!** 🐝🌻

Want to do something simple that can make a difference for honeybees right in your own backyard? **Plant flowers!** 🌸🌿

Bees need a steady supply of nectar and pollen throughout the season, and even a small garden can become an important food stop for local pollinators. πŸπŸ’›

Here are **5 bee-friendly plants that do well in Alabama:**

πŸ’œ **Lavender** β€” Beautiful, fragrant, and a favorite when it’s in bloom.

🌻 **Sunflowers** β€” Easy to grow and absolutely covered with pollinators!

πŸ€ **Clover** β€” Before you reach for the mower, give the bees a chance to enjoy those blooms. 🐝

🌼 **Wildflowers** β€” Planting a mix can provide a variety of blooms throughout the growing season.

🌿 **Basil** β€” Instead of cutting it back when it starts flowering, let it bloom. The bees will thank you! 🐝🌸

And here’s the really cool part… πŸ‘€

The bees enjoying the flowers in your yard could eventually find their way into **local hives**, helping produce the honey you enjoy right here in our community. 🍯🐝

🌱 **Plant a few flowers. Help feed the bees. Support local honey.**

It’s a small action that can become part of a much bigger cycle. πŸ’›

We’ll have **QUEEN CELLS available starting in August!** πŸ‘‘ These cells will be produced from carefully selected breeder stock with strong genetics, giving you an excellent option for growing and improving your apiary.

Queen cells can be a great tool for beekeepers who want to:

🐝 Make splits and grow their number of colonies
πŸ‘‘ Requeen existing hives with fresh genetics
πŸ’ͺ Strengthen colonies and improve overall hive performance
🌱 Introduce quality, locally raised genetics into their apiary

And if you’re looking for a strong start next spring…

🍯 **FALL NUC REGISTRATION OPENS IN SEPTEMBER!**

Our nucleus colonies will be **overwintered** here and prepared for pickup in **early March**. Instead of starting the season with a brand-new package, you’ll have an established colony ready to hit the ground running. 🐝🌸

Whether you're a new beekeeper looking to get started or an experienced beekeeper wanting to expand, **planning ahead can make all the difference.**
