The Holiday Farm Fire. The Cedar Creek Fire. The smoke that kept families indoors for weeks.
Lane County understands the cost of waiting too long to act.
The Eugene-Springfield area now ranks second in the nation for short-term particle pollution, much of it driven by wildfire smoke. This affects our families, our businesses, our forests, and our local economy.
And we continue to see what happens when responsible forest management gets delayed.
The American Forest Resource Council recently highlighted the Grasshopper Fire burning on the Mt. Hood National Forest. Years before this fire, the U.S. Forest Service and local partners identified thousands of acres in the area for hazardous fuels reduction and forest restoration. But litigation and years of delays slowed that work from getting done on the ground.
Now, the Grasshopper Fire has burned through areas identified for treatment and forced evacuation warnings around communities and recreation areas near Mt. Hood.
We cannot continue waiting until smoke is in the air and communities are threatened before taking wildfire prevention seriously.
I have helped pass legislation in Oregon to improve how we respond to wildfires, but more needs to be done. We need responsible forest management, faster wildfire response, and federal policies that allow land managers to do necessary mitigation work before disaster strikes.
I am proud to have the endorsement of Associated Oregon Loggers. Their support reflects our shared belief that we can protect our forests, reduce wildfire risks, support good local jobs, and manage our natural resources responsibly.
As Lane County Commissioner, I will bring people together and work toward practical solutions that protect public safety and respect taxpayer dollars.
