Exciting Quilt Program!!! Join the Filson Historical Society for an interview, conducted by Curator of the Black Experience Archive Dr. Jacqueline Hudson, with noted quilt artist "Sunshine" Joe Mallard. Hear him speak about his incredible quilt making career from discovering his love of the needlecraft from his great-great grandmother in Mississippi to the inclusion of his pieces at the Obama Presidential Center and in the Filson's current exhibition, From the Same Cloth: Textiles of the Ohio Valley in the Nash Gallery.
Born in 1943 in Summit, Mississippi, “Sunshine Joe” Mallard lives and works in Louisville, Kentucky. He is recognized as both an artist and activist. His practice is closely tied to teaching and mentorship. In 2012, he received the ArtsReach “Living the Vision Award”, in 2019 he was inducted into the Mc Comb, Mississippi Hall of Fame and in 2022, he served as Artist in Residence with the Children’s Defense Fund National Youth Program at a Freedom School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the University of Louisville.
Dr. Jacqueline Hudson is the Curator of the Black Experience Archive at the Filson Historical Society.

Another exciting quilt program coming up with Vickie Coleman!! This program is a partnership between the Filson and Farmington. Please note this program will be at FARMINGTON.
The Quilt Bed Turning at Farmington
Date: September 12, 2026
Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Location: Farmington Historic Home, 3033 Bardstown Rd., Louisville (In Person only)
Free - Register here
Vickie Coleman
Please note: There are TWO sessions for this event. Each session is limited to 30 participants. Please choose one session to attend when registering.
A quilt bed turning is a traditional way to showcase quilts and the stories behind them. Several quilts are carefully stacked on three tables arranged together to resemble a bed. One quilt at a time is “turned back,” revealing the next quilt in the stack. As each quilt is presented, our presenter invites the owner to share its story, history, and significance, while adding additional information about its design, fabrics, construction, and historical context. The result is an entertaining and informative presentation that brings each quilt, and the story it tells, to life.
Guests can see quilts up close without handling them directly, and participants are invited to bring their own quilts for discussion or identification no later than 30 minutes before each session.
Vickie Coleman is a quilt historian and appraiser recognized in the quilting and textile community as Kentucky’s only certified quilt appraiser. She founded Bluegrass Quilt Appraisal, LLC, based in Lexington, Kentucky. Her work combines textile expertise with a commitment to preserving quilt heritage through careful evaluation of a quilts’ history and condition.

Please join us for our Thursday's night meeting:
Thursday, September 3, 6:30 pm

State Fair Show and Tell
The Jeffersonian Paper-pieced Woven Star

You can come early to socialize and help with setup.

In addition to normal show and tell, it’s time for State Fair Show and Tell! If you entered anything in the Fair, please bring it (along with your ribbons!) for a special show and tell.

Afterwords, we will continue our star sampler with a Paper-Pieced
Woven Star. Paper Piecing is a bit like the Ginger Rogers of quilting -
it’s a little bit backwards and in high heels, but the results are precise and
crisp. In addition to your usual sewing supplies, you will need:
4 3”x5” rectangles (in focus colors)
4 3”x7 1/4” rectangles (in focus colors)
2 6” squares cut once on the diagonal (background color)
4 5” squares cut once on the diagonal (background color)
You can make this star totally scrappy, or make it more “ribbon like” by using pairs of one 3”x5” and one 3”x7
1/4” rectangles in the same color. Directional fabrics are not recommended for this pattern.

Thank you to all the LNT members that came out to the fair today on Senior Day to help us sew CC tops for the children at NCH, sew bags for the girls at Maryhurst, & to tie quilts for the beds put together by SHP. We got a lot done! A special thanks goes to Robbie for bringing us her collection of sewing machines to use, to those that pulled in heavy wagons loaded with sewing machines, Barbara for bringing her wagon full of quilting magazines (which were given away free as well as thimbles), those that helped set up our demo area & break down everything when the day was done. WHEW! Today was really a group effort & we saw a lot of familiar faces from previous years as well as new ones that asked us many questions about what we were doing & showed interest in our sewing guild. My heart runneth over with “Thanks!”

Thanks to Becky for her wonderful presentation Thursday the 20th of the State Fair Quilt block. As a retired teacher of 600 children a week Becky shared her organizational skills complete with explicit directions, informational board depicting how each block should be put together, AND blue ribbons for everyone that completed their block after today’s lesson!
