The First Car Project goes beyond providing a young adult with their first vehicle. They also help cover some of the expenses that come with getting safely on the road, including insurance, initial maintenance and repairs, and registration taxes and fees for the first year.

That added support can make a huge difference for a young person transitioning out of foster care and taking on the responsibilities of car ownership for the first time.

Receiving a first car through The First Car Project is about more than driving away in a new vehicle. It’s a milestone, and one that comes with education, preparation and a community of people cheering each recipient on.

Before receiving their vehicle, recipients complete The First Car Project’s Foundation for Success Training, where they learn practical skills like budgeting, vehicle maintenance, insurance, safe driving and planning for the future. Then, at a Key Ceremony, they get to celebrate everything they’ve worked toward alongside the people who helped make it possible.

That’s the kind of lasting impact we’re proud to support through Laswell Cares.

The First Car Project brings together individuals, businesses and community partners to help provide reliable vehicles to young adults transitioning out of foster care.

This photo is a great example of that mission in action. Community member David Stolberg donated this Ford Escape to The First Car Project, giving the organization another vehicle that can ultimately help create a life-changing opportunity for a young person in Kentucky.

Vehicle donations, financial support and community involvement all play a role in making The First Car Project’s work possible, and we’re proud to be part of that support through Laswell Cares.
