Solar panels are only as good as the roof — and the installation underneath them.
This is what can happen when solar is installed over an aging roof and the mounting system isn’t properly secured. In this case, a mounting fastener missed the roof framing. Over time, the bracket loosened, the seal around the pe*******on failed, and a substantial roof leak developed.
Now the repair involves more than simply sealing a hole. The solar panels have to be professionally removed, the damaged roofing and decking opened up and properly repaired, the roof system restored, and then the solar system reinstalled.
If you’re considering solar, have the roof inspected first. Making sure the roof has adequate remaining life — and that every pe*******on is properly installed — can prevent a very expensive problem later.
