🌿💜 NATIVE PLANT OF THE DAY: DOWNY SKULLCAP 💜🌿

Pretty. Tough. Native. And — perhaps most importantly — knows how to stay in its lane. 😂🌱

Downy Skullcap is part of the mint family, but don’t panic! Unlike some of its enthusiastic relatives, this beauty grows in tidy clumps instead of plotting a complete garden takeover.

💜 Blooms July–September with gorgeous violet-blue flowers
🐝 Bumblebees, butterflies & hummingbirds LOVE it
🦌 Deer & rabbit resistant thanks to its fuzzy texture and bitter taste
☀️ Drought tolerant once established
🌿 Grows about 2–3 feet tall and 1.5–2 feet wide
💪 Handles everything from woodland conditions to dry, rocky clay

And that name? The little ridge on its seed pod reminded early botanists of a tiny medieval helmet — or skullcap. ⚔️🌿

Basically, Downy Skullcap is the garden friend we all need: beautiful, low-maintenance, brings the pollinators, repels unwanted guests, and respects boundaries. 😂💜

🦋 MONARCH MAGIC IN THE ZINNIA PATCH! 🌸

Our zinnia patch has officially become one of the hottest hangouts at Hess’! Monarchs have been stopping by every single day, and today we caught two of them together, fluttering and dancing around the blooms like they had planned a little morning date. 🦋🦋💃🌸

This is exactly why we love planting for pollinators. A patch of colorful flowers isn’t just beautiful—it becomes a little place to rest, refuel, and gather for some of our favorite garden visitors. 💚

And this Kentucky native has been showing off for a LONG time. False Sunflower grew across Kentucky’s historic prairies long before European settlement, making it a true part of our region’s natural landscape. 🌿

Basically, she’s native, historic, pollinator-approved, and pretty enough for a vase. Overachiever. 😂🌼

A tiny garden ninja hiding in plain sight! 🥷💚

While pruning the roses, we almost completely missed this praying mantis—he was so perfectly camouflaged against the rock, we had to do a double take. 🌹🪨 Apparently, hide-and-seek is just another service happening in the garden. 😂
