⚠️ What is Bark Inclusion?
These photos show a classic example of bark inclusion — where two stems grow tightly together and bark becomes trapped between them instead of forming strong connecting wood. Over time, this creates a weak attachment point that can split apart unexpectedly.
In this case, you can clearly see:
• The compressed seam between the stems
• Old wound closure around the union
• Separation and decay beginning within the attachment point
As trees continue to grow, the pressure increases, especially during:
🌬 High winds
❄ Heavy snow/ice loads
🌧 Saturated ground conditions
Bark inclusions are one of the most common structural defects we look for during tree inspections because they can significantly increase the risk of failure.
If you notice multiple stems with tight “V” shaped unions on your trees, it may be worth having them evaluated before a problem develops.
