Thinking about installing a ceiling fan? Hereโs a safe, step-by-step guide to help you do it right with Handydads. For the full article, read the blog at **handydads.net/blog**.
Step 1: Safety first โ Turn off power at the main circuit breaker and verify no electricity at the fixture with a voltage tester.
Step 2: Remove the old light fixture โ Unscrew the mounting hardware and disconnect the wires.
Step 3: Check the ceiling box โ If the existing junction box isnโt fan rated, replace it with a heavy-duty brace and a fan rated box that can support weight and vibration.
Step 4: Assemble the fan โ Follow the kit instructions to assemble the motor housing and downrod.
Step 5: Mount the fan โ Lift the fan onto the mounting bracket, connect matching colored wires with secure wire nuts, carefully tuck the wires into the box, and attach the canopy.
Step 6: Finish and test โ Attach the blades and light kit, then turn the power back on to test.
From the toolbox: One of our lead technicians has seen a wobble when a heavy fan was hung on a non fan rated box. We installed a proper metal brace to grip the ceiling joists securely for a safe, quiet breeze.
Top tips and cautions: Use a fan rated junction box; always turn off power before touching wires; balance blades if needed; match wire colors; avoid over-tightening mounting screws.
Tools and materials: Energy Star certified ceiling fan; non contact voltage tester; wire stripper; sturdy ladder; electrical tape; screwdriver set.
