If you manage a commercial building in Los Angeles, you know what August feels like from the inside. π‘οΈ
Not dramatic. Not a failure. Just heavier.
The AC has been running since May. The chiller has logged hundreds of hours at or near peak load. The cooling tower has been working through June Gloom, through the July heat events and now into the hottest stretch of the summer. Nothing has broken, but something is starting to feel like it's carrying more weight than it should.
A tenant emails that it feels warmer on the fourth floor. The compressor cycles a little longer to hit setpoint. The energy bill ticked up in a way that's hard to explain. You walk through the mechanical room and something sounds slightly different than it did in June.
We call it the August Wall, the point in summer where three months of sustained operation and compounding minor wear start to show up in ways that are easy to dismiss, but harder to ignore.
It doesn't always mean something is wrong, but it's always worth paying attention to.
We're curious how August is treating the building operators and facility managers in our Los Angeles community this year? Is your system holding strong, or are you starting to feel the wall?
