Oh no 😅 the birds found your kale!

Don’t worry, this happens to almost every gardener at some point, and it’s completely fixable!

One simple thing I like to do is mix a little castile soap, cayenne pepper, and water in a spray bottle and lightly coat the leaves. Birds usually don’t like the taste or heat, so it works as a natural deterrent. Just remember to reapply after rain or watering.

And yes, go ahead and prune those damaged leaves 💚 I know it feels wrong at first, but removing the rough leaves actually encourages your kale to push out fresh new growth.

If the birds keep coming back, simple bird netting over the plants works wonderfully too 🌱

There’s nothing more rewarding than turning something you grew yourself into a meal on the table 🌿

Today’s farm-to-table meal features zucchini and patty pan squash straight from the garden, cooked with onions, mushrooms, garlic herb paste, seasoning, butter, and olive oil for a simple but comforting stir fry.

Served alongside steak, mashed potatoes, and gravy 💚

Gardening really changes the way you experience food. It teaches you to appreciate the process, the harvest, and the nourishment that comes from growing your own ingredients.

This is what intentional gardening looks like, the fresh food, real connection, and meals made from what you’ve grown with your own hands 🥰

These Komatsuna greens were planted by one of our students and are now being harvested to help feed veterans in the community!! 🥹

This is one of the most meaningful parts of gardening , watching something grow from a small seed into nourishment for others. 💚

POV: you spend the day with a gardener who’s building more than just a garden 🌿

Come with me for an offsite day-in-the-life — from visiting gardens and learning new systems to connecting with community and finding inspiration beyond the backyard.

A lot of people only see the planting part, but so much of this work happens behind the scenes: learning, teaching, planning, observing, and constantly growing right alongside the garden itself.

This lifestyle has taught me that gardening isn’t just about growing plants… it’s about creating spaces that nourish people, homes, and communities over time 🌱

A few moments from our garden class today 🌱

We spent time learning how to build a proper garden bed, source quality soil, understand composting, and harvest crops intentionally.

One of my favorite parts of teaching is watching people realize that growing food is possible for them too. With the right systems and guidance, gardening becomes less overwhelming and much more sustainable long-term.

If you’ve been wanting to start a backyard garden but don’t know where to begin, this is your sign to get support instead of figuring it all out alone 🌿

Most people plant the wrong things in their backyard… and that’s why they don’t see results 🌿

If you’re just starting, focus on crops that are reliable and productive, not just popular.

These 5 crops are a great foundation because they grow consistently, are easy to manage, and actually give you something back.

Grow with intention 🌱

Today was about protecting what we’ve planted, making small adjustments, and continuing to build a space that can actually produce and sustain!

Because a garden isn’t just something you grow… it’s something you care for consistently.

And when you do that, it gives back in ways that matter 💚
