Confession time: I spent way too much on garden gizmos when I first started, and most of them ended up in the shed collecting dust. Now I know better, and I want you to save your money too.

You don't need a pile of gear to grow your own food. A solid trowel, good seeds, and a basic watering can will get you pretty far. Almost everything else? You can skip it, improvise with what's already in your kitchen, or make it yourself from stuff you'd otherwise toss.
