As architects, one of the greatest questions we've been exploring in recent weeks is this: what does it mean to rebuild Los Angeles?
The housing crisis has already been challenging, but the fires have rapidly exacerbated the need for housing throughout our city.
One approach we propose is that of Gentle Density: a solution that adapts suburban lots to create low-impact, attainable home-ownership on a modest scale. When repeated, the proliferation of slightly denser lots creates sustainable growth. Gentle Density focuses on creating harmonious, community-centric solutions for LA's housing needs.
While there is no single answer to resolving our current housing crisis, thinking outside the box and beyond the abode can lead us to better economic growth and stability, particularly in Los Angeles, where density runs thin but neighborly bonds run deep.
By embracing thoughtful design, we can rebuild and renew while preserving the character of LA.
