Having a bright and collaborative environment is important at AC Martin. With only one office in downtown Los Angeles we create a single hub of activity. On a daily basis you can see interns mingle with senior designers and clients; internal accomplishments and awards posted in the kitchen; a lunchtime watercolor class; or a project team in the studio pinning inspirational images. Here in this space, excellent design is nurtured and opposite viewpoints are welcomed in an effort to promote innovative design. We have a very diverse group of designers with different professional backgrounds who can offer alternative strategies for problem solving. By promoting innovation, discovery, and communication, while embracing the firm's traditions, history and accomplishments, we have created a distinct personality in the industry.

𝗔 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝘂𝗯 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

California State University, Northridge and AC Martin developed a shared vision for the Autodesk Technology Engagement Center (ATEC)—a flexible, inclusive STEM hub shaped through workshops with university leaders, faculty, staff, and students.

Beyond its labs and makerspaces, the center expands access to STEM education, resources, and career pathways. ATEC is home to the 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝘂𝗯, which works to close equity gaps in STEM; the 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝗯, serves CSUN students and community learners from preschool through community college; and the 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿, offers advising, mentoring, networking, and career resources.

𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄.
The new Sciences and Engineering Laboratories at San Diego State University Imperial Valley in Brawley, CA is a robust, adaptable, and flexible facility that expands educational opportunity, supports research in clean lithium extraction and renewable energy, and gives students and the community access to STEM pathways to shape the future of the Imperial Valley—also dubbed the ‘Lithium Valley'.

Knowing flexibility was central to the design, the team designed hybrid spaces that could support multiple disciplines. The labs were designed to shift disciplines every three hours—maximizing the building’s value within the budget while allowing it to evolve with future programs and research. Serving as both an academic and economic catalyst, the facility creates the county’s first wet-lab teaching environment, providing hands-on learning for new four-year programs in biology, chemistry, engineering, and nursing. With laboratories making up 70% of the building, the project includes wet, damp, and dry labs, along with teaching, research, faculty, and collaboration spaces.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀—𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲.

Today, we’re featuring the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's (LADWP) downtown headquarters, now known as the John Ferraro Building. Designed by AC Martin and completed in 1965, the building has become one of Los Angeles’ most recognizable civic landmarks.

The building is iconic in its look, beloved for its nighttime appearance and the horizontal concrete slabs that define the building’s exterior. The building’s architecture is symbolic of the essential public at the heart of the city, supporting the everyday needs and well-being of the communities it serves. Its legacy of innovation extends to sustainability as well, becoming the first building in California to achieve LEED Zero Energy.

Its architectural significance and lasting impact have been recognized through numerous AIA awards, including the 1966 Award of Honor, the 1967 Premier Grand Prix Award, and the 1999 25-Year Award. In 2012, the Los Angeles City Council officially designated the building as a Historic-Cultural Monument.

AC Martin-designed multifamily project received approval from the Santa Monica Architectural Review Board this week. Located at 1633 26th Street near the Water Garden, this transit oriented development designed for Mill Creek Residential is also located near the Los Angeles Metro Bergamot Station Exposition Line to provide residents with easy transportation from Santa Monica to Downtown Los Angeles. This Disability Pride Month, we’re highlighting universal design as a foundation for creating more inclusive and welcoming campuses.

At West Los Angeles College, the site for the Dr. Morris J. Heldman Center has a 24-foot elevation change and a network of difficult-to-navigate paths, bridges, and elevators that created accessibility challenges. The design for the new Heldman Center addresses these barriers through universally accessible routes that meander through landscaped gathering spaces and create clearer connections across campus.

The result is more than a way to get from one place to another—it is an equitable campus experience designed to support access, connection, and belonging for everyone.

This Disability Pride Month, we’re celebrating the role design can play in advancing access, independence, and inclusive care.

At CSU Dominguez Hills’ Orthotics & Prosthetics Education Center, students learn, create, and provide care in specialized labs, maker spaces, and clinical environments designed to support their education and future practice.
