-exploring details- Himeji Castle🏯 Standing above Himeji, the first thing we notice is the white surface. But behind that calm appearance is an extraordinary wooden structure.Himeji Castle was largely rebuilt in the early 17th century, using a sophisticated timber construction system. Its thick plastered earthen walls provided protection while also creating the distinctive appearance that earned it the name “White Heron Castle.”
What fascinates us is the balance between structure, material and beauty. The construction is highly functional, yet the way those materials are assembled becomes part of the architecture itself. For us, it is a reminder that good construction begins with understanding the material and knowing how to use it with precision.
Himeji-jo became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and is recognized as a masterpiece of wooden construction.

-exploring details- Himeji Castle 🏯 A castle is often imagined as a massive wall protecting what is inside. Himeji takes a much more sophisticated approach. Its defensive strategy is embedded into the architecture itself: winding paths, gates, walls, towers and carefully controlled approaches were designed to slow and confuse an approaching enemy. The result is an architecture that constantly controls movement. You turn, change direction, pass through thresholds and discover another layer of the building.
This is one of the lessons we find most compelling at Himeji: architecture is not only about what we see. It is also about how a building makes us move through space. Completed largely in the early 1600s, Himeji-jo remains an exceptional example of Japanese castle planning and defensive architecture. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

-exploring details- Himeji Castle🏯What impresses us most about Himeji is not simply that it survived for centuries, but how carefully its construction has been understood, maintained and repaired over generations. The castle is predominantly a wooden structure, and preserving it has required traditional techniques, careful attention to materials and a deep respect for its original craftsmanship. UNESCO recognizes the importance of maintaining its authenticity through its design, materials, techniques and setting.
For a construction company, there is something particularly meaningful in that idea: a building should not only be designed for the day it is completed. It should be built with its future in mind. Himeji reminds us that construction, craftsmanship and maintenance are not separate stories. They are part of the same story, one that can continue for generations.

Today’s conversations at ReINVENT26 reinforced something I believe every director should keep in mind:

Boards don’t create value by managing operations, they create value by asking better questions.

One of the highlights for me was the discussion led by Richard Munro and an outstanding panel of experienced directors on what effective governance looks like as organizations navigate AI, cybersecurity, talent, capital allocation, and accelerating change.

A few takeaways that stood out:

• Great boards focus on strategy, not operations.
• Directors should challenge assumptions, not micromanage ex*****on.
• Governance today requires continuous learning, especially around AI and cyber risk.
• The board’s role is to strengthen decision-making and help management succeed over the long term.

As CEO of Caltron Construction Inc. and someone who has served on nonprofit, academic, and governance boards for more than two decades, I always value opportunities to exchange ideas with leaders who are shaping the future of corporate governance.

The best directors never stop learning.

One phrase stayed with me throughout ReINVENT26:

Next Practices, not Best Practices.

Best practices reflect what worked yesterday.

Next practices prepare organizations for tomorrow.

The discussions throughout the day explored how boards and executive teams should be thinking about:

• Agentic AI
• Cybersecurity
• Talent
• Strategy ex*****on
• Economic uncertainty
• Capital allocation
• Leadership adaptability

As directors, our responsibility isn’t simply to oversee today’s business. It’s to help organizations prepare for what’s coming next.

That mindset is becoming one of the most valuable assets any board can have.

One of the greatest benefits of serving in board leadership is the opportunity to learn from remarkable people.

Today at ReINVENT26, I had the privilege of spending time with directors, CEOs, executives, and governance leaders discussing the challenges organizations will face over the next several years.

Technology continues to evolve.

Markets continue to evolve.

Governance must evolve too.

I’m grateful for opportunities like this to strengthen relationships, exchange ideas, and continue growing as a director. Every conversation makes us better prepared to help organizations create long-term value.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experience and insights today.
