This garden was designed to connect our clients home to the contiguous Arcadia Wash and it’s native vegetation, soils, geology and flood control structures. Beneath a canopy of mature coast live oaks, we have aesthetically organized a garden around what might have been the remnants of the Wash’s hundred year flood onto a residential property. Front garden of a house designed in 1926 by architect Everett Phipps Babcock, Pasadena, CA originally both his residence and studio. We designed the garden in a traditional/minimalist solid parterre form but substituted dwarf olive for typically used thirsty boxwood.

A gravel drive can be quite sublime and often ecologically sound because it facilitates percolation of rainfall to the natural groundwater table. We popped off the old impervious asphalt and added bluestone gravel and an allee of sycamore trees. Fairly young garden, about a year old. Traditional with a fresh, edited and modern approach.

The side yard revisited. Circular lounging. A circular fire table surrounded by two circles of single trunk olive trees (Olea europaea ‘Majestic Beauty’ and a circular dwarf olive hedge (Olea europaea ‘Little Ollie’). Clipped dwarf olive is an excellent drought tolerant substitute for clipped boxwood. Also quite a handsome shrub left to its own devices! Installed about a year ago.
