Final walkthrough of the Castle series. This time we’re taking you through the mother-in-law suite, starting with a full kitchen of its own and the stairs that tie the new space to the rest of the house.

A suite like this is all about independence under one roof. Family close by, but with their own space to cook, host, and come and go on their own terms. The stairs had to do double duty: easy and comfortable to use every day, while still feeling like they belong to the original home and not like an afterthought.

This is the last video in this series, but the project is still moving. Follow along to see how Castle comes out once it’s finished.

Part 4 of our Silver Lake remodel. Before we get to the messy part, a quick look back at the primary bathroom we built here a few years ago. Walnut cabinetry, fluted wood walls, and a design that stays as true to mid century as possible. Designed by Corinne Mathern, who is back with us for this addition and remodel.

Some clients ask: “are there going to be surprises?” Here’s one. We expected 12” joists when we opened the ceiling, and they turned out to be 8”. So we brought the engineer in fast, got a new beam designed, and handled a few other upgrades for the second floor while we were in there. Something like this can stall a job for months. We had it moving again within a week.

Part 3 of our addition in Silver Lake. We’re heading upstairs to the second floor primary bedroom.

Those two closets you see were the full extent of the primary storage. Not nearly enough. So we’re moving the window over to make room for a new doorway leading into a hall, with a laundry room right off it and a walk-in closet that sits directly above the downstairs kitchen. The hallway will also lead to the new office upstairs.

This floor is getting everything it should have had from day one, and the whole space is going to be really functional now.

You’re going to love it. They’re going to love it. You’ll see.

Pt. 2 of the Silverlake project.

The engineer called for footings about 30 inches deep. We went to about four feet, and a little wider.

That’s how we like to build. We always go a little overkill on the structural points, because this part gets buried and nobody ever sees it again. It’s the part that has to be right.

The pier pads get the same treatment. A lot of builders pour these by hand, and if you crawl under the house years later, the concrete holding up the posts is a sloppy mess. We frame ours out so they come out clean and architectural. The sloped tops also shed water away from the posts.

That almost never happens. New owners usually tear out what the last people did. These owners wanted more of it.

Someone found a stone trough and decided it should be a sink. Everything else in this room got quiet so it could be the loudest thing in it.

Old stone is not a simple install. It is heavy, it is not square, and the drain has to land where the stone says it lands, not where the plumbing wants to go. Worth every bit of the trouble.

Same counter, other side. It runs straight through to the exterior ledge so both halves read as one surface. Yellow stools were the right call.
