The farmhouse sink sits right under the opening, so you are looking out at the garden while you work. Warm wood-lined shelving against clean white cabinetry keeps it from reading cold.

Same counter, other side. It runs straight through to the exterior ledge so both halves read as one surface. Yellow stools were the right call.

Same three confirmations still stand: designer credit, full address block, and what the backsplash and counter actually are.

Completed kitchen in Los Angeles. The island is the argument, so let’s start there.

We built it freestanding with turned legs so it reads like furniture, not a boxed in cabinet run. Deep plum paint, butcher block top, deep drawers on the working side. It is the only painted thing in the kitchen, which is exactly why it works.

Everything else is walnut. Inset doors and drawers, glass front display at the corner, dark stone counters, and a metal hood over the range. Green glazed tile on the backsplash, brass schoolhouse fixtures, red oak floors running continuous into the living space.

Honest question. Would you have painted the island or kept it walnut?

Some of the wood in this LA house is a hundred years old and you cannot tell which pieces. Matched doors, matched casing, furniture grade vanity, scribed linen built in. Guess which ones came with the house.

Here is the Los Angeles walnut kitchen finished and actually being used.

The part people miss in the reveal is the storage. A full spice drawer next to the range so nothing lives on the counter. A wine fridge tucked into the run instead of standing alone. A coffee nook with its own outlet and shelving so the machine has a home and the counters stay clear.

That is the difference between a kitchen that photographs well and one that still looks like this six months in. You decide where everything goes before the cabinets get built, not after.

The stone runs full height behind the range and wraps the island. Walnut everywhere else. White oak floors carry into the living room so nothing breaks up the space.

What is the one thing in your kitchen you wish had a dedicated spot?

A few favorites from our Ventura project. This one is built around an interior courtyard with a single olive tree at its center, framed in steel and glass. Inside, the open living and kitchen space runs right out to that courtyard, so the light and the greenery are part of the room. We kept the primary bath quiet and simple and let the materials and the light do the work.

The kind of work we’re proud to put our name on. Which space would you want to come home to?

Some rooms you renovate. This one we brought back to life.

Custom walnut cabinets built and finished on site, deep red tile with a mosaic floor, and a clawfoot tub right under the window. Even the fridge disappears behind walnut panels.

Every detail was a choice. That’s what makes a home feel built, not bought.

Which one stops you: the walnut wall or that tub?

Some kitchens you walk into and the color just stops you. This one does it every time.

The question I always get before we commit to blue this deep: won’t you get tired of it? After building a lot of these, I can tell you the answer is no, not when every wall is built around how you actually live.

→ The range wall, where a custom hood wraps that pro range so it reads built-in, not bolted on.

→ The sink wall, where most of the day happens. Apron-front basin, counter space on both sides, a window over it all.

→ Then through the arch to the breakfast nook, the corner everybody drifts to. Patterned floor, warm light overhead, a table sized for the people who matter.

Get the bones right and a bold color doesn’t wear out. It settles in.

Which wall would you spend the most time at? Let me know below.

A few favorite details from a mid-century home designed by .

This project was driven by Lindsey Chan’s vision from start to finish. The materials, and details were thoughtfully considered, and it was a pleasure bringing that vision to life.

We’re proud of how this home came together and grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such a talented designer.

This whole-home build came together around warm white oak millwork and clean, deliberate detailing.

In the living space, we built a floor-to-ceiling white oak unit with open cube shelving and a low bench cabinet that steps down the wall. A slatted reveal across the top keeps it light, and the grain runs clean across every face.

The primary bath pairs a freestanding soaking tub with soft green mosaic tile and a floor-mounted filler, while dark mosaic floors carry through the home to tie the spaces together.

Honest materials, custom millwork, finishes built to last.

Built by Raleigh Pruett and Jason Houck.
