🎃: Patch for Kids from Burpee Gardening by Ball Seed Company

Can you believe how many pumpkins were growing on this ONE plant that took over my front yard?! I didn’t even feed it!! Can you imagine if I fed it?!

Whoever named this pumpkin NAILED it. It’s a new pumpkin bred specifically to be prolific with a thick sturdy handle, perfect for being handled by kids.

It’s marked as ornamental, but we might crack a few open and try to eat them. I harvested some green because I want to plant in this space, so it’s time for the pumpkins to go.

It was planted in May, was slow to start, then went bonkers. If you plant Pumpkins, be prepared for a 6 month window with them in your garden.

Battling Mosquitoes 🦟?

Plant Scented geraniums also known as citronella or mosquito plant. While it doesn’t kill them off, it does give off a scent that they dislike and discourage them visiting your house.

Even more importantly, check for still water daily since mosquitoes can breed in as little water as a bottle capful AND go from egg to adult in a week’s time.

Building an ecosystem that supports natural predators for the mosquitos such as dragonflies, bats, birds, spiders etc will also help manage mosquito populations.

✅ Bucket list: See Amorphophallus titanum in person!

Have you heard of the co**se flower?!

I remember learning about this plant in bio classes as the largest bloom ever, stinkiest, and how rare it is!

Green Boy was first planted in 2002 and it actually bloomed at 2-3am so we JUST missed full opening 🙈. The Co**se flower opens only for 24-48 hours, and it all depends on the weather. In a greenhouse, under expert care and conditions, a co**se flower can bloom every 2-3 years. But in the rain forest, it blooms every ONCE every 10 YEARS!

I’m trying to turn my kids into plant people, so I definitely had to take them to the The Huntington to see this amazing plant!!

Do you know why it smells like rotten flesh? Nature is SO cool, even when it stinks 😝

Happy FIFTEENTH anniversary to us ♥️

We met during USC FEMBA program (Aug 2008) and got married 15 years ago today.

The OG’s know… we fished a lot before kids: freshly caught tuna parties , fish tacos, crab and even spring lobster.

We tried to get on the water, but between kid activities and the actual cost to go on a charter boat, the trips dwindled a lot.

Until we went discovered surf fishing 3 weeks ago and made it a family of 4 activity. It has been amazing to reconnect with a hobby that brought so much joy pre-kids and also get our kids “hooked” on fishing.

I’ve been gardening/fishing almost everyday and will soon share more (once I figure out how to not get sand/saltwater on my camera gear 🙄)

And in case you ever wondered where the “coastal” from Coastal Homestead came from… now you know 😜

So I guess … the couple who fishes together, stays together 😜 and yea we are both firstborns and very competitive with each other on fishing.

And yes. That last fish, for the real anglers know… I had to release it and couldn’t keep it 😭 but heard it’s good eating 😜

No fish. No regrets. Some days the cast matters more than the catch.

Context: I gave up a lot of hobbies to focus on my garden design business the past 5 years. Gardening was a hobby that I turned into a career where I had to win to make a living. Gardening became a chore.

Fast forward, a few weeks ago, I re-connected with my love for fishing and it’s been life changing. Grab my rod, run down to the beach, even if it’s for 30 min even if I don’t catch anything 10/10.

Moral of the story: Find what makes you feel alive, forces you to be present. That’s the biggest CATCH 🎣
