At this Malibu beachfront residence, the transformation went far beyond repairing the existing deck. The completed space feels open to the Pacific, connected to the home and comfortable from day into evening.

Durable materials, integrated lighting, concealed technology and carefully considered architectural details work quietly in the background, allowing the experience of the coastline to remain at the forefront. The result is more than a redesigned deck. It is an extension of the home—a sophisticated outdoor living environment created for gathering, relaxing and experiencing life along the Malibu coast.

A moment worth looking back on. Earlier this year, Jonathan Wurster, Principal of Archetype Design Collective, accepted the BIG SEE Award for Vertical Studio.

More than an award, it was a recognition of the vision behind the project—and the ideas that challenged us to rethink what a residential environment could be.

How do you reinforce a beachfront structure without compromising the view?

The solution begins by designing around what matters most.�
At the Malibu Beachfront Deck, the existing structure was carefully retrofitted and repaired before being reimagined as a sophisticated outdoor living environment.

From durable Ipe decking and a custom trellis to frameless glass windscreens, cable railings, integrated lighting, and built-in planting, each element was selected to balance performance, longevity, and connection to the Pacific.

Even the most discreet details had an important role. Concealed systems allow the deck to transition effortlessly from open daytime views to a warm and inviting evening environment.

How do you redesign a beachside deck without losing what makes it special?

At this Malibu residence, the project required far more than a visual update. The existing deck needed extensive structural repair and careful retrofitting before it could be reimagined as an outdoor living space—one that preserved uninterrupted views of the Pacific and the Malibu coastline.

The objective was simple in principle, but complex in ex*****on: strengthen the structure without making the architecture feel heavier or compromising the experience of the setting.

That required a clear understanding of the existing conditions, careful coordination and a design approach that allowed the architecture to remain open and connected to its surroundings. Solving the structural challenge was only the beginning.

At Winding Way, many of the home's most important architectural moments relied on precision that quietly disappears into the finished design.
