How to check your roof for hail damage yourself? Start down low, before you ever climb anything or let a stranger up there. After a storm blows through East Texas, your driveway fills up fast with folks offering a "free roof," and some of them are counting on you not knowing what you're looking at. So walk your yard first. Check your gutters, downspouts, flashing, window screens, even the hood of your truck. Hail leaves little dents and dimples in soft metal, and that's your first honest clue. If it dinged your car, it probably bruised your shingles too. Know what you're looking at before anybody writes you a bid.
