Alligators are fascinating creatures. They have roamed the earth in some variation since the time of the dinosaurs, about 200 million years ago. They can grow an endless number of teeth, up to 3,000 teeth in their lifetime, however, they only have between 74-80 teeth at one time. Every time they lose a tooth, another grows in to take its place. Alligators lay eggs and the temperature of their nest determines whether the young will be male or female. Warmer temperatures produce males and cooler temperatures produce females. Alligators don't have vocal cords but that doesn't stop them from being chatty. They produce a range of noises like hisses, growls, grunts and roars. Their stomach acids have a ph level of less than 2, which allows them to dissolve the bones of the animals they eat. Bone takes between 13 to 100 days to break down in their stomachs.

South Carolina is home to two types of vultures: the turkey vulture and the black vulture. The turkey vulture has a red featherless head while the black vulture has a black or gray featherless head. They are nature's cleanup crew and eat dead things that other animals won't touch. Turkey vultures can smell a dead animal (carrion) from miles away, whereas the black vulture does not have as keen of a sense of smell. Black vultures will often follow turkey vultures and aggressively take over a dead animal from the turkey vulture. Vultures lack an actual voice box so they can't sing. Their vocalizations are limited to hisses and grunts. They also don't build nests but rather lay their eggs on the ground, in caves, hollowed out trees, among rocks or in abandoned buildings. Their primary defense mechanism is to spew projectile vomit at would-be threats. In some regions of North America, vultures are referred to as buzzards.
