Commonly installed during the mid-20th century, these 9”x9” tiles are often associated with asbestos-containing materials. Both the tiles themselves and the black adhesive (often called cutback mastic) used beneath them may contain asbestos.

The good news? Asbestos-containing floor tiles generally present a low exposure risk when left intact and undisturbed. The concern arises when they’re broken, sanded, ground, or removed improperly.

Inadequate clearances of overhead service conductors above roofs can create safety hazards for contractors and risk damaging both the conductors and the roof surface.
Generally speaking, service conductors ought to have a minimum 8’ clearance above the surface of the roof. However, several exceptions exist within the code allowing reductions in clearance height depending on a number of variables. These exceptions are why we don’t often see service conductors elevated to 8’ above roofs in most residential applications for example.
Regardless of the exceptions at play, there is no instance that would allow the condition shown pictured here, with the conductors resting directly on the roof surface.

More isn’t always better. We found excess CSST gas piping connected and coiled in a crawlspace when only a fraction of that length was needed to reach the appliance.

Gas piping systems are sized based on factors including pipe diameter, developed length, available gas pressure, and the demand of the connected appliances. Adding unnecessary length increases pressure loss and can reduce the capacity of the piping system.

CSST is a great product when properly sized, supported, bonded, and installed—but the goal is to provide an appropriately sized route to the appliance, not store the extra 50 feet in the crawlspace.

A storm collar is a weatherproofing component installed around a metal flue or vent where it passes through a roof flashing. 💧

Its primary purpose is to prevent rain, snow, and meltwater from running down the exterior of the vent pipe and entering the building through the gap between the pipe and the roof flashing.

Making the determination between past or ongoing moisture intrusion can be challenging without recent rain or snow, even with all of the modern tools at our disposal such as infrared imaging and moisture detectors. Once water enters a structure it can travel and present in ways and locations that you may not expect.
