I don't normally use traditional methods of securing the wood decking boards(5/4 flooring) unless otherwise requested. I use a Camo fastening system which side anchors the boards so no visible holes or places for water to set and rot occur. Very little extra cost to use this system and extends the life of your flooring tremendously. We also use joist tape which is a self sealing membrane that seals all screw holes, new and existing, underneath the decking boards so no new joist rot or weakening

Recent Albemarle job. All custom notching. Rail and post are one 6x6 notched. Very strong! It's how i do most my of my decks. Also the railing was all custom built with a style I've done several times. Seems to be really popular and surprisingly affordable considering the finished product
