After a frost or freeze, many gardeners wake up to plants that look rough — wilted flowers, blackened leaves, or damaged new growth.

Before you panic… most plants will recover.

Here’s what to do if frost nips your plants:

• Wait a few days before cutting anything
• Trim off dead or mushy leaves later
• Water the soil and feed lightly
• Protect plants if another cold night is coming

The plants that usually show the most damage are early flowers, tender annuals, and fresh tree leaves, but in most cases the roots and crowns are still perfectly healthy.

🌿 With a little time and warm weather, many plants will push new growth within a week or two.

With freezing temperatures Monday and Tuesday night and frost possible Wednesday morning here in Georgia, it’s time to protect those garden plants.

Many perennials like hostas, daylilies, and shade plants are starting to wake up, and their young shoots can be damaged by frost if left uncovered.

Here are 5 simple ways to protect your plants:

• Cover plants before dark
• Water the soil in the afternoon
• Mulch around plant crowns
• Move container plants to shelter
• Add a little temporary heat if needed

Most established plants will survive the cold, but protecting new growth can save you weeks of recovery.

🌱 Morning Tip:
Remove covers once temperatures rise above freezing so plants can breathe and get sunlight.

🥶 Bentley Gardens Freeze Protection Mode

When the forecast calls for a freeze, it’s time to get serious about protecting the plants. Tonight at Bentley Gardens the shade house is covered with frost cloth, old bed sheets, and anything else that helps trap a little warmth around the plants.

Hostas and many shade plants here in Georgia are already waking up for spring. Those tender new shoots can be damaged quickly if temperatures drop into the 20s, so covering them for a couple nights makes a big difference.

Everything at Bentley Gardens will stay tucked in through the cold stretch. Once the weather warms up later this week, we’ll uncover the plants and give them a good watering.

Sometimes gardening isn’t glamorous…
but protecting the plants now means healthy plants all season long.

I’m starting to think garden centers are like magnets. You go in for one thing… and somehow leave with a cart full of plants you didn’t plan on buying.

Between the squirrels, falling nuts, and trying to beat the birds to the harvest… growing nut trees can turn into a full-time adventure.
