A myth about Class 4 shingles: they're impact resistant, not indestructible.
Class 4 shingles use SBS-modified asphalt. That rubbery mix holds the granules on a little better and gives the shingle a little bounce when hail hits, instead of cracking like something rock hard.
Takeaway: Class 4 helps your roof take a hit. Big hail can still do damage, so know what you're paying for.

Replacing your roof in Arvada? Know this before you sign anything: Arvada requires Class 4 impact-resistant roofing under the City of Arvada Amendments, Sec. 18-191. Class 4 is the highest impact rating under UL 2218.

Hail hit your neighborhood? Here's where we start.

4 things we check after hail, before we ever climb up:

1. Siding and paint: chips, dings and fresh spatter marks
2. Windows and screens: dents in the frames, tears in the screens
3. Gutters and downspouts: dents along the metal
4. The roof: dented vents, flashing and hits on the shingles

Impact resistant doesn't mean Mother Nature can't touch your roof. 🎓

Learning with This Guy, Episode 2: Class 4, Part 2.

Class 4 is the highest impact rating a shingle can get. Class 3 is tested with a 1.75-inch steel ball, Class 4 with a 2-inch one. But that testing is done on brand-new shingles. Fifteen years of Colorado heat, freezes and storms later, your roof won't hold up like it did on day one. And baseball-sized hail doesn't read lab reports.

So what do impact resistant shingles actually do well? The rubbery SBS-modified asphalt lets a hit bounce back a little, so the granules stay put. Those granules are sunblock for your shingles. Lose them and the mat underneath breaks down in the sun.

Want to spend the extra money? Go for it. Don't? Also fine. Just know what you're paying for. (Stone coated steel is another option, but that's another episode.)

Hail rolled through? Here's what a real inspection looks like.
We start on the ground: front, right, back, left. Paint, windows, gutters, anything that shows hail hit the house. Then we get on the roof and document everything up there: shingles, vents, solar panels, all of it.
And we'll be straight with you: we're not adjusters and we're not insurance people. We can't guarantee anything. What we can do is give you a clear, honest picture of what's on your roof.
