5 things I wish I knew before replacing my roof 🏡

Replacing your roof is a big investment, and there’s more to it than picking a shingle color.

Here are 5 things we think every homeowner should know before starting a roof replacement:

1. Don’t automatically choose the lowest estimate. Make sure you understand what materials, labor and warranties are included.

2. The shingles you choose matter. We trust and use IKO North America shingles on our roofing projects. Their Dynasty Performance shingles feature a reinforced ArmourZone® nailing surface, Class 3 impact resistance and a limited wind warranty up to 130 mph, depending on the applicable warranty terms.

3. A roof is more than just shingles. Underlayment, flashing, ventilation and other components all work together as a system.

4. Don’t overlook attic ventilation. Proper ventilation is an important part of a properly designed roofing system and can help your roof perform as it should.

5. Your contractor matters. Even the best materials need to be installed correctly. Ask questions, understand the scope of work and choose a contractor you feel comfortable trusting with your home.

The old siding is officially gone, and our crew has started installing the new James Hardie trim and siding on this western Wisconsin project.

Do I need new siding, or can I just paint it?

The answer depends on the condition of your siding. If your siding is still structurally sound but has faded, is peeling, or you’re simply ready for a new color, painting may be a great option.

If you’re dealing with significant cracking, warping, rotting, or other damage, replacement may be the better choice.
