As we slide into fall, it’s a good time to start preparing your home for the cold winter days ahead. The good news is that most tasks can be completed quickly.

Here are 5 fall home maintenance tasks you can actually knock out this weekend.

1. Clear the gutters.
Leaves and debris left in place mean water backing up where it shouldn't.

2. Disconnect outdoor hoses before the first freeze.
A forgotten hose can crack a spigot fast.

3. Swap your HVAC filters.
Your system works harder in fall and winter. Give it clean air to pull from.

4. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

5. Check exterior caulking around doors and windows.
