Pretty surreal walking into both the Newport and Lincoln City community colleges and seeing my face hanging on the wall as the featured Oregon Small Business Development Center success story. Not bad for a guy who spends most days covered in soot, crawling around roofs in the rain, and arguing with 40-year-old chimney caps that have completely given up on life.

Huge thank you to the SBDC for all the guidance and support while building Soot Busters Chimney Sweep LLC from the ground up here on the Oregon Coast. Small business ownership is equal parts hard work, stress, caffeine, and wondering why customers wait until smoke is pouring into the living room to call the chimney guy. Pulled up to a job in Florence yesterday and turns out… the chimney already had tenants.

Yep. Bats.

This is exactly what happens when a chimney isn’t properly capped or maintained. Critters move in, block airflow, and now you’ve got a whole different kind of problem on your hands.

Besides the obvious “I don’t want bats living in my house” issue, this can also create serious draft and safety concerns.

Got the situation handled and gave the homeowner a plan to keep this from happening again.

If your chimney doesn’t have a proper cap, you’re basically running an Airbnb for wildlife.

Out in Salishan today doing a chimney inspection for a real estate transaction—and this one had more issues than expected.

The general home inspection did call out a couple concerns, but that’s only part of the story. Home inspectors don’t inspect the entire chimney system internally.

Luckily, the buyer made the smart call and brought me in for a full chimney inspection with camera scope—and we uncovered additional issues that weren’t visible from the outside.

This is exactly why a dedicated chimney inspection matters, especially during a home purchase. It gives everyone a clear picture of what’s really going on before closing.
