There are certain details in craftsmanship that, though small and easily overlooked, possess a strange power over the eye.
A border around the perimeter of a deck is one such detail.
Without it, the decking stretches outward in an unbroken expanse, each board vanishing into the next. But introduce a border, and suddenly the chaos has order. The perimeter becomes defined. The eye is drawn along its edges, as though compelled to follow some ancient geometry hidden within the structure.
It frames the deck much as a picture frame confines a painting, giving the entire surface a deliberate sense of proportion and completion.
It may seem like a small thing—and in terms of construction, it is.
But aesthetics are often governed by such things.
It is not always the grandest features that command our attention. Sometimes, it is the subtle details lurking at the edges that transform something ordinary into something truly finished.
